How Dead By Daylight is NOT Beginner Friendly… (Rant)

Read more Dead by Daylight ➜ https://deadbydaylight.mgn.gg

Dead By Daylight is one of the least beginner friendly “competitive” experiences in the videogame market. Not because the game itself is hard, but because the tutorials and perk design fall short to the standard quality of videogames in 2024.

  1. DISCLAIMER: The % I did regarding the locked content a new player will have is WRONG! I counted it as a PC player without the console characters, so the error margin is around 5% for the total!

I wanted to talk about a topic that, for some reason, almost nobody talks of in the community, and that's how TERRIBLE the new player experience is for Dead By Daylight. Back when the game was still fresh and the content was small, this was not a big deal. DbD was a scary experience, and not knowing anything is part of the charm. Nowadays, with the introduction of the aggresive SBMM, Dead By Daylight is far from a "casual" experience. With over 35 killer powers to learn, each with 20 addons to choose from, 255 perks that can alter the match, maps with RNG generation and veterans with thousands of hours of experience, Dead By Daylight is not beginner friendly.

The issue I find is that the game's core is becoming simplified in terms of mechanics, when the game itself is already easier than League, Valorant or any other true competitive game. What DbD needs is to become BEGINNER FRIENDLY, and it's ridicuouls how the Mobile version of Dead By Daylight is significantly more noob friendly than the pc and console version of the game. The tutorial is horrible and this video will prove it, the grind and perk unlock system is daunting and unrewarding for the vast majority of casuals, and the scam of secrets is an insult that only exists as a scapegoat for this game not to be accused of "pay 2 win" when it already has pay 2 win mechanics in the means of "Pay 2 Skip"

If you are a veteran, and you played with someone you wanted to introduce into the game, you probably noticed how many things you take for granted that are very confusing for new players. Like 99% the gates, where generators spawn, how items work, killer powers and counters….

I hope this video is useful to prove how bad the casual experience of DbD is if you don't play this game every week and are up to date with the reworks and changes killer powers have, like the future Twins update.

  2. Wow I enjoyed this video thank you. I have an idea for the tutorial for new players and might be fun for old players. Like for survivor and killer, they could add little scenario challenges on both sides. You know like they did on Friday the 13th game. That would teach new players and could actually be fun. Like for survivor side what to do when your teammate is being camped or for killer how to apply pressure when the gens seem to be going quick. Just a thought…

  3. The one thing I hate about the survivor tutorial is that they don't teach you how to look behind you properly. If you're a console player and you start to play games on pc, the tutorial for survivor doesn't explain how to move and turn your camera at the same time. I had to come to youtube to look for a tutorial. I play on pc now and still use a controller because its still hard for me to use the keys to look behind me while I'm walking or running.

  4. Like you said this has been their financial strategy since Myers DLC, put all good/fun perks behind a paywall, a year later (if you're lucky) it may be in the shrine and then shortly after it will be nerfed. I never bought a single DLC for this game or any game for that matter. Sure BHVR is scummy for doing it, but in reality the community is also at fault for buying the DLC and going along with this moneygrab in the first place.

  5. Remember when the p2w topic was brought up and the major communities just called it stupid and bs cause new players arent at a disadvantage apperantly.

This playerbase does not like the new player experience from what ive seen

  6. As a new player, I agree. My gf been playing since 2019, and tried to get me to play in 2021. Could NOT get into it. Nowadays, I actually started playing, but she essentially has to be my coach and remind me of what to do and what everything does. THERE IS SO MUCH abt dbd and a lot to learn before actually playing, and the game does a sub-par job of telling you. Even though I mostly understand the games mechanics, It's a lot to juggle mentally when I am already bad at everything compared the average player.

  7. between may and December I got like 700 or 800 hours in dbd, over 55 prestige across characters about 100 or 200 dollars spent, I got a computer and all of that time and money spent is gone because there's no cross platform progression from playstation

  8. I actually tried to play this game exactly once after Trickster came out. I was so humiliated by how badly I lost that I uninstalled the game and have no desire to reinstall. I’m a fake fan, I have no intention of actually playing this dumpster fire, but the characters and lore compel me to no end. I really do feel like the entire system of DBD needs a complete rework- take the entire damn game offline for a bit and address the root issues. Stopgaps piled on top of each other are only going to make things worse.
And something I’ve been saying for years: ADD A SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN. A way to grind for resources and points without getting slaughtered by other actual players would be a much more welcoming experience than just throwing you right into the deep end.

  9. Yeah another “Look it up yourself” game like that is Terraria, although it isn’t a PvP game like DbD. The wiki is extremely helpful, even to expert players(such as myself) especially when trying to learn about the ~30 different combinations of difficulties and counting. This game has done it better than DbD though because it isn’t a game that throws everything in your face instantly and expects you to understand it. Hell, 60% of the game is locked behind a progression barrier to make sure that the player is actually ready to take the massive difficulty spike that comes.

I mean, even I just yesterday looked up stuff about an in-game mechanic that has been in since 2020 that I just never learned how it worked.

  10. I just started playing the game this week and the power learning gap is so real 🙏 great video. Learning killers like Wesker as a survivor is so brutal. Youre usually given a tool tip at the start of the match… that tries to summarize the power in one sentence 😅❤ Dont get me started on add-ons. Ive Googled powers mid match before LMAO

  11. what if all perks were available in the blood web by default, but buying and prestiging the character it came with would work the same as it does now (where doing so automatically gives it to the other characters at that tier)

  12. I just started playing 5 days ago for the first time and I’m genuinely trying so hard not to put it down, and this is with dbd vets that I play with giving me some initial funds to buy dlcs.

I’m glad I ran into your videos cause it really does showcase the issues I’ve been trying to tell them about, but even then they’re not very receptive to it.

There are times when they’re confused by the decisions I make in some games and I get confused by their confusion cause like?? I’m new? How am I supposed to know what y’all know after 5 days? But then I try to see their side and understand that they don’t play with new players and I’m the anomaly.

I’m grateful to have people that walked me through some of the mechanics, but even then it gets frustrating when they recommend builds to me for survivors and killers and it’s all dlc locked and their only counter to it is “just wait on shrine of secrets”. And I’m constantly BROKE with BP cause I’m trying to get prestiges for these perks they recommend. I got G3 before rank reset and my 450k was gone before I blinked.

They genuinely don’t see the problems with being new since they’ve been with the game for so long and have everything.

(Thanks for listening to my rant) 🫶🏾

  13. "boring grind" is just playing the game as you would normally do. There is no boring grind like in mmo where you spend hundrets of hours farming one stupid mod to obtain that 0,001% drop.
EDIT: oh you the guy with "3500h grind to have everything" where you cherrypicked informations to make a point.

  14. The problem with implementing this is that for BHVR to do anything, it needs a way to make them more revenue. However, if you think about it, implementing a more in-depth way of explaining the game and all its mechanics (even a link to an external site on the DBD website) is likely to have more new players stay in this game and be more likely to buy licensed DLC

  15. I watched DbD on and off thoughought the years but officially got it in 2021. I took a year break after all my friends left it, then returned August 2023 where I have been playing since. I had to do a lot of homework to catch up, but did so pretty easily and somehow got better at looping despite not practicing.

When I introduce people who haven't played the game in a hot minute or they're fresh babies, we always host a Custom. We go over basic looping, the Killer they're against and their counters, and most importantly, the numerous status effects that the game's tutorial doesn't go over.

There are so many niche things with every Killer that their tips don't warn you about.

When I play Killer, I go easy on newbies. I won't baby them since they'll have to learn somehow but oftentimes I let them escape.
I even taught a baby Meg about an invisible Vault in Swamp (the log) since she boxed herself in so after downing her I vaulted a few times to showcase it to her, than later in the match when she was in the area again she used it!

I'd say if you're new to DbD but have some friends to play with it's doable, but I can't imagine doing it alone nowadays.

  16. I have no idea how there are new players still coming into the game. You have to be a walking encyclopedia to understand the game, you have to be a walking wallet to afford all the content, and a walking punching bag to endure the torture of losing for hours
