A pure man that believes in God and fighting a war he never wanted corrupted him to lose his faith in humanity thus finding the lament configuration he became so evil that he's the leader of the cenobites. Their motives comes from their words. As Christie thinks Frank was dead and Pinhead says "WE WANT THE MAN THAT DID THIS!" and she thought they're coming for his dad, but in actuality they wanted Frank who took Larry's skin. They have their own way of justice a twisted dark way.
It's not just about pain for the Cynobites. They're extreme BDSM enthusiasts, they get their rocks off to all that pain and terror.
