  1. Partially agree. However DbD has at least started some bigger changes such as the new game modes, even if they are very simple. If the community keeps giving feedback positive and negative, it's possible they make some even bigger changes.

  2. DbD really is the Smash Bros of Asymmetrical horror games. As no other asymmetrical horror game can kill it or even live up to it. We honestly need a company to make an asymmetrical horror game with their own original content and then start reaching out to licenses. I wonder which IP holders would allow to have their characters in multiple asymmetrical horror games.

  3. Dead by Daylight has stayed alive purely because of its licensed killers. If not for that, it would've died long ago. Now they have so many killers and are still adding them, it's the only choice for someone wanting to play as or against a killer they like. I agree they've monopolized it, but I don't think it's impossible to directly compete with it either. I just think someone needs to be creative enough to come up with a really fun gameplay loop.

  4. It is dbd fault the major problem is that other games kinda suck or if they do not suck they are going to be boring soon. Even dbd started somewhere and on realase it has just 3 killer without any licence. Plus the major of the players do not play because the game has lot of licenced charcaters or map but because the game is fun and it takes quite a lot to get bored

  5. I think you're off on a few of your points here.

    First, you say that DBD hasn't changed or innovated since launch, but that doesn't really hold true. They've added perks that interact with the game in new ways, such as blocking generators, hex/boon totems, and deep wounds/endurance. They've experimented with new game modes. They've even made some changes to the base mechanics of the game, such as adding endgame collapse, and anti-camp features. Yes, the core gameplay loop remains the same cycle of avoiding killers and working on generators, but I think a strong argument could be made that those shouldn't change, and that doing so would make the game lose its identity. You wouldn't accuse Legend of Zelda of failing to innovate just because you still do temples, fight bosses and save the princess.

    Second, you use the examples of VHS and Friday the 13th going under to claim that DBD is killing off competition, but both of those games died off for reasons completely unrelated to DBD. VHS was killed by network issues and cyberattacks, and Friday the 13th was killed by copyright issues. I think there is a lot of room for other asymmetrical horror games to thrive, but they have to be stable, be fun, and do something better than DBD can. I completely agree that no game is going to be able to compete with DBD on the basis of licensing characters, but they don't have to, there are a million other reasons people play videogames, and as long as a game can be better than DBD at one of them, it'll find a niche.

    In all, I think blaming DBD for the failure of other games in its genre isn't a fair, or accurate assessment. They have a huge advantage in the market, but the existence of a market leader doesn't erase competition. To your phone example, Apple is absolutely a market leader in phones, but their existence doesn't erase Samsung, or Huawei, or LG. In fact, it forces them to improve, in order to compete with Apple. The same applies to DBD. It isn't killing asymmetrical horror games, it's merely setting a standard, that the competition will be measured against. It will force them to improve, to be better than DBD, and if they can't, would they really have been worth playing anyways?

  6. My things is the fact that survivor gameplay is the most brain dead thing ever. And they’ll never change it cause the ppl who main survivor are a bunch of unemployed alphabet community clowns who would have a fit if they had to actually do something in order to win.

  7. DBD didn't ruin anything, per se, they just created something that no other ASYM game couldn't stand a chance against. So, by being the "top" ASYM horror genre related game no other of the same genre can even compete, plus a lot of the other ASYM games like DBD like Evil Dead for example just had their devs bail on them or Friday the 13th losing their license. So, honestly there's a huge reason DBD is at the top and will stay that way for most likely until ASYM horror dies

  8. I would never want dbd to die or go away. I don't want them to fall off. I'd love it if they can enter a second golden age. The Hoodie example was right. Nothing feels as right as dbd. And I don't WANT them to get replaced. I just want someone to bring out a horror game good enough that all the suits at bhvr go oh shi we gotta try again.

  9. i'm honestly not even sure why the other games flop gameplay wise. dbd became successful when it had a lot of bullshit in it, so many bugs and broken/unfair mechanics and is one of those games where you don't even stand the thought of a chance if your opponents have more experience than you.
    killer klownz and tcm were both the same way. once you played enough, got a good enough build going etc, you'd stomp matches just like 4man swfs with insta heals, bnps, dead hard ds unbreakable etc. so… what is different? why do people stick with dbd but everyone quit tcm and killer klownz.
    i guess dbd's formula really has been perfected so that even if you don't know why, you'll always prefer it over others.

  10. Honestly, I think the reason for most asym horror games failing is not because of DBD, of course that makes it quicker, but the main reason is because most suck. The Friday the 13th game was pretty much dead before DBD got popular. VHS definitely could have been successful and I think if it wasn't for DBD it would have been. I have not played either of those though. I have just over 1k hours in DBD as of now and continue to love playing it, and while it has many flaws the greatest part is just the fact you can make your own fun with different perks, killers, friends, etc. I have played a little bit of TCM and killer klowns, both games were absolutely garbage and in no world would stand longer than a year even if DBD didn't exist. It wasn't fun to play either role on both games when I played, and atleast in TCM's case I know that its because of the game direction they chose to be a casual game, when you can escape in like under 2 minutes I think. Problem is that hide and seek is not fun in a game where the most fun part is the chase. DBD fixes this problem by adding tracking perks and tracking abilities to some killers, meanwhile TCM has like 1 tracking character, and I barely played killer klowns because of it being terrible so I don't even know what they have.
    I would love to have games to compete with DBD, I wish VHS survived so we could have an alternative to DBD but unfortunately it didn't. Friday the 13th still maintained a small, fairly casual audience for a while and was definitely a great game to stick to the asym horror vibe, but even DBD can barely be classed as a horror game anymore. I hear theres another friday the 13th in creation, hopefully that turns out well.

  11. not sure how it’s bhvr’s fault that companies are choosing to focus on making entire games based on one franchise instead of making games that could incorporate multiple licenses which is the only reason dbd is still so huge. lol

  12. You're right about the concept, but I think you're wrong in the reasoning.

    Dead by Daylight isn't dominant because they have all the licenses (Although that helps). They have all the licenses because it's so popular. Dead by Daylight is the largest game because it was earlier than the other games and it became bigger than other games. Dead by Daylight is the go-to asymmetrical horror game because it's the biggest (by definition). This means that when any other game comes out, a fraction of the player base will probably go play, but you'll never get the entire playerbase to switch.
    Like you said, they'll all eventually come back to Dead by Daylight, and the only way something is going to replace that is if it's better than DBD and stays better, to the point where DBD players would rather play that other game. and even then, people have spent money on DBD, so it would be EXTREMELY hard for that to happen.

  13. I've been saying for years that it would be cool for dbd to have a 1v1v4 game mode where 2 killers compete against each other to hook survivors. Killers could hurt each other (with M1 or abilities), causing the struck killer to drop the survivor who would be able to run with the injured state, just like true strike.

  14. There was another asymmetrical horror game that I played for a good while, not really popular or well known, but surprisingly still going, is Monsters & Mortals. While it claims to be more like a Super Smash Bros, it really feels more like a Dead By Daylight. It's fun and non-stop chaos, but sadly I've been losing interest over the fact the game takes way too unbelievably long to give us any new content, or any patches and QOL changes. It took so long that I didn't care they collaborated with a very controversial game, because I just wanted something new and an excuse to play the game again. They had dedicated servers, which made the game actually playable for a long while, but they removed dedicated servers in favor of Peer-To-Peer just to have an Epic Games port that no one asked for. Now the game is practically unplayable as someone who naturally has bad internet, and the player count is near non-existent. And new DLCs are still so far apart. It's a huge shame, because I love Monsters & Mortals, but the game is sadly handled very poorly.

  15. DBD is the only game worth playing because it's the only game who's core design isn't a gimmick. At the core of DBD is the chase, which is something skillful for both sides. Not 1 other asym horror pvp has been anything but a gimmick. Evil Dead. Gimmicks. F13. Gimmicks. Texas. OVERLOADED with gimmicks. Like take any of those games and take away all the character building you would normally do and what is left? What is the gameplay loop? There is none. You do objectives and then when the killer finds you, you die because without the gimmicks there is no actual chase dynamic (or conversely you can run away forever and can only be stopped when a 2nd killer literally just makes it impossible). Strip away all perks and items and killer powers from DBD what is left? The chase. That's what keeps people playing. What's the core gameplay loop of Texas? Nothing. There is none. If you are victim your pick locks and run out the door. If you are killer, you insta-kill victims after a few hits because it's the only way you can get away with all those gimmicks. Those games were fun when people were new and didn't know the mechanics, once they do these games become insanely boring to play because it doesn't take much any skill to chase and outside of all the bells and whistles there is no actual core gameplay loop. DBD just becomes more complex once you mastered the core gameplay loop, and the added difficulty of facing a better opponent is equalized by the player's agency to out skill them too.

Tbh dead by daylight is a good game but the reason people come back is not cause of the new killers mainly due to the fact that they are ALWAYS behind a pay wall, DBD meta just changes so much and although the core mechanics dont change (which many games dont do because the core game is already good) the meta will change and it will always change how the match will feel and turn out for both killer and survivor.
