Dead by Daylight’s devs are in a tough spot. With their most important event to date only 3 months away, the game they’ve built atop a foundation of spaghetti has broken yet again. But what should be done about it, if anything? Join professional bad-opinion-haver Das Food as he shares his thoughts on the situation!

  1. I don’t think we need a health update as they keep fixing bugs each update. Even with content updates they bug fix the game. They haven’t made a bug fix less update. I know that bugs show up each update, but I know eventually they would be fixed. As for the pallet stun, I believe it’s because they did it too early. They need to pallet stun you after the pick up animation is done.

  2. if the anniversary event is as big as they’re making it out to be then i don’t think them skipping a chapter for operation health would upset people as much. especially if the killer is someone huge like jason, pennywise, predator, etc. their fan bases would keep the game afloat.

  3. I disagree on two fronts:

    1) A "Chapter" focusing on revamping perks (The ones that are absolutely useless like Monstrous Shrine, Beast of Prey, and so on) would add enough new content by itself that they could get away with not adding a new Killer/Survivor/Map for three months. That in and of itself would inject new life to the game as everyone is trying to figure out what works and what doesn't, as well as adding multiple playstyles if done correctly.

    2) They wouldn't go broke by not releasing a new chapter so long as they had their very talented and honestly inspirational art team working on skins in the mean time. I am currently refusing to buy the latest Yui skin simply because the state the game is in right now, and I would 100% buy it if they announced an operation health for the game along with any skins that came out for Yui or my killers.

I do agree that it would probably take them more than three months to fix the game, but it's not like they don't have options to keep people coming back for more in the mean time.

  4. Whats the point of all this new content if most people just run the meta anyway? All it does is make the bloodpoint grind even harder than it is for new players.
    (Just playing devil's advocate here)

  5. I just want to shed some light on what causes the "spaghetti code" the game has, and the real tasks that need to be done to fix it.

Let me get something out of the way first. Normal code would never bug out if gone untouched. Unless you have some extreme case where you've written it where each line of code's function depends on the last, but that doesn't really happen. That's not how programming works.

What's causing these bugs is the fact that a lot of the game's code isn't actually "written". This is something BHVR has mentioned in the past, but general knowledge should be that unreal engine games typically run on two separate types of code: C++ and blueprint. C++ is pure, actually "written" code, that you'd probably think of when you hear the word "programming". This code is more efficient, meaning the game will run better, and unrelated functions won't bug out when some other feature is added or modified. Blueprint code is different. With blueprint code, you don't write anything. You essentially use tiles to "map out" what it is you want the game to do in certain situations. When you make code this way, the computer generates code the best it can based on your instructions. This code is HIGHLY inferior to human-written code. Not only can it make the game run slower, but also, this code can be unknowingly generated in a way that depends on other functions of the game, breaking them when those said functions are changed.

*Keep in mind blueprint code isn't evil or anything, nor is BHVR lazy in using it. It honestly saves time, and is really useful when doing things, such as collision detection.

So, what does this mean? Well, as Justin mentioned in the infamous Dev QnA, the devs have been gradually translating that blueprint code into better, more efficient, C++ code. meaning, they are untangling the spaghetti monster as we speak– though, unfortunately, some things get lost in translation. This may exacerbate the bugs presumably untouched features receive, as there's a chance not all avenues are considered when rewriting, say a perk, or addon, into C++

I can't really say how long I think it would take BHVR to rewrite the code better, simply because I don't know what is and isn't written in blueprint code. I trust though, that they have been making serious progress on doing so, so soon enough, we won't have bugs like these as often.

  6. Dead by Daylight became one of the most purchased games of all time. "The game is fine the way it is". That's what you are telling the devs everyday you log into the game, every time you buy something ect.

If you think DbD needs to be fixed then go play something else. The devs arent gonna change course if the player base doesn't, why would they? That's bad business.

I would go as far to say, that the DBD community loves broken, unbalanced, expensive games. They must right?

  7. Do you guys really want a operation health? Dont get me wrong if it was any other studio i would be clamoring for one but i would put money that theyd fuck up their game even more trying to fix it

  8. I think during the anniversary an anoucement of game health is something I'm hoping for. If year 7 anniversary is a flop I dont think the game would hold on for much longer, especially with vhs comming

  9. The short answer is "YES!" But I've been saying this for the past few years, they need to drop all the dlc's for minimum 3 months but I've even said I'd take a full year without new content if they'd just fix the damn game. Hell at this point they might have to just rewrite the whole game. Good luck with that BHVR!

  10. I agree with a lot of this. If they are able to maybe set aside a small portion of the team to make incremental progress on "Op Health" before going all in on it with the entire team for 3 months, that'd be cool. I'd say it's in their best interest in the long term to invest in it at least at some point because… well, who knows just how hard things will fall apart in the future

Looking forward to the anniversary event for sure, though. I feel like it'll be a big one. But after, I guess we'll have to see what happens, because perks and killers being Kill Switched probably isn't something that can just keep happening, especially back to back. Great video though man, this and your dead hard video has gotten me to stick around now

  11. Haven’t played the game in a few months or so, but if they announced during the anniversary event that they were going to skip the next chapter to do a health update along with adding in another big name to the game, I would definitely come back. Even if they can’t successfully fix what they wanted, I would still respect them for trying, which would give me enough faith in the devs to continue to support their game.

  12. Personally I think the game is fine if you're facing solo players as either side. Both sides have ample opportunity to win depending on who's really trying or bringing better perks or addons, but as soon as you get into sweaty SWF territory you don't stand a chance to win unless you yourself sweat. It makes playing Killer so boring going against groups all the time that don't make mistakes if you're an M1 Killer and fly through gens so they can mock you at the gates that you only got one of them.

  13. i think that they should do it after the chapter after the anniversary. if they do it after the anniversary, all the new players that joined will get bored. they should package it in September with a rework (maybe to the twins and legion) and then when they drop, they take a break to work on the health. then when they come back, they can show us all of the new things they fixed and changed and i feel as though if it’s good enough for the player base, we will be okay with waiting another 3 months for new content

  14. With how minor most bugs are, how often the game breaking stuff is disabled immediately, and how much work a heath chapter would be for functionally no results, it just seems like a waste.

  15. also the game has been out for 6 years. the realms beyond update was great imo but we just need change. a cool idea i thought of was the characters in game were starting to fade to the void. maybe more of the least picked players like jane, jeff, and the hag (but it keeps rotating characters). the players have to start playing them to reach a quota and if they don’t reach it then they disappear from the game and their perks become base perks like noed and fixated. or maybe something like characters get “vaulted” and return in the next chapter where new characters get vaulted and vaulted ones come back. (seems a bit extreme but we just want something more than just killer vs survivor)

  16. honestly, i dont think they have a chance to fix the code anymore. for them to realistically work on code, they would need to have a separate team to work on a brand new code for the game, and i dont think they can afford it. with the rise in license killers recently, they have a limited amount of time to have the killer available, like we saw with demo dog. If they dont keep turning out new content like they have, having new abilities on favorite characters, new areas to interact, then the player base will dwindle even faster. Those licenses are expensive to upkeep and if they dont have new players/ returning players coming in, playing the new content, buying the next chapter and cosmetics, they cant afford to renew them which will cause a death spiral of the player base.
If they stop to fix everything now(or after the anniversary event), i believe that will not necessary kill the game, but will start a decline steeper that what they are experiencing now.
will they recover? who knows but the chance to fix the code has long passed. Should have been done before Myers entered the game

  17. I think their biggest issue is how God damn slow they do things. So many issues have taken so long to be addressed, and I'm not just talking about bugs, but balance especially. So many balance issues have been untouched for so long and the ones they have touched took forever. The biggest issue is player retention, why do you think survivor queues are almost always long and killer queues are instant? Because so many killers have gotten frustrated with the game balance and either switched to playing survivor or just quit entirely. These recent exploits don't help either.

I don't know, I guess I'm saying a big balance patch would do more than a health patch in my opinion.

  18. We wouldn’t mind them not releasing content in order to fix the game as long as they COMMUNICATE that. Knowing bhvr, they could be doing all of this behind the scenes but just never say anything about. It would look like there is no new content and they’re not working on anything. Just look at how awful the Q&As are, they mentioned stuff from years ago that they said they’d work on and only now say that they’re not gonna do it. They give vague answers which lead us to believe they don’t care about the game and aren’t doing anything. If they rewrote the game, we’d all be fine with that if they communicated with the community along the way and gave updates.

  19. From the other content creators in this current bubble, I don't recall them asking for this to happen asap. The sentiment over all seems to lean towards wanting this type of thing for DbD and I have to fully agree.

I do think people to quickly forget the quality updates that are added to the game. But BHVR seem to enjoy ruining the good faith they build up from a good patch by breaking thier game (Literally any large patch) or saying something stupid like dO wE rEaLlY nEeD cOlOr BlInD mOdE or basically thier entire last Q n' A.

I know alot of creators have positive things to say about the people that work at BHVR and that's great that they all seem to say the same positive things about them on a personal level. But this is an online, always live, games as a service. They have to get off thier ass and do something to retain players.

You mention alot of massive cross overs that brought in a huge influx of players. They do come in and play, but the losing half of that spike in under a year with regular updates and new content. That is an unhealthy drop in players. And I think the problems are too numerous to pick a single thing, the game is suffering from a thousand cuts.

BHVR needs to do something, they need to pick something to work on, and the thing is, starting with the code is the base that lets you build better things. So that should be a focus.

  20. in regards to the points of the player numbers dropping, i think you are misunderstanding the point here. When ever you see an event collabs between games, you'd see a large influx of players then player number dropping for a few months to eventually reach a new averge player count. the problem with bdd is that its been more than six months since recident evil released, yet dead by daylight is still bleeding players, this just goes to show that dbd has no player retention, and that is something to be concern about.

  21. You’d think the amount of times they have patched their coding from perk and map breaks before that it would get easier to be able to pin point the issues. Yet no matter how many times it breaks it takes weeks on end to fix for them.
I wish they could have way more testing be done in their PTB. Like fuck if the new chapter is what broke those perks and it wasn’t an issue in the PTB then the buffs to Sako had to have broke them somewhere meaning they should have extended the PTB just a tad be longer so people could test out stuff and find this BEFORE it broke the live version.
Unless of course it was something else that did is but I digress.

  22. Since devs don't care about anything, but money, they will not do anything and will just keep releasing same shit 3 monthe period. They don't care bout this game and players. They don't understand the concept of skill even, coz kills and escapes are clearly what skill trully is. They don't respect players. This games needs fundamental rework, new side obj for both sides, new game mechanics, new game mods. And none of that will be done, coz devs don't care.
