I have no disabillitys whatsoever, but a friend of mine with whom i regularly play games every Tuesday and wednesday evenings is left-handed. The amount of games he has to handcraft his settings just because noone thinks a mouse would ever be on the left side is mind boggling. And its not like he can just use the same settings all the time across the board, he has to sit their, play and test and see what works, sometimes it works faster, sometimes it goes longer. Sure its not that big of a deal like other things (flashlights for example) but its just unneccessary he has to PLAYTEST the games before he can enjoy them just because he is left-handed.
Hi! I'm gonna be honest and say that this video just sort of showed up in my feed and I felt the need to leave a comment so apologies if I'm retreading things you've already spoken about in previous content.
First of all, definite hard agree on almost everything you've said here. I've never understood the frothing at the mouth visceral hate reaction discussions of accessibility brings out of gamers. There are genuinely no good arguments against it but they act like it threatens the sanctity of gaming or something. "But this option would give an advantage to people who don't need it!!!!!1111111" Okay and? I would much fucking rather have people gain an unintended advantage with accessibility options (such as with the heartbeat indicator) than people who need them not be able to play the game. Especially on your flashlight point, the idea that people are so against the screen simply turning black instead of bright orange when blinded is crazy. I'm not light sensitive at all but I would use the absolute hell out of that option. It would give no advantage, you would still lose access to your vison for a few seconds, and it wouldn't be obnoxious to look at.
"Oh but it's not realistic" Okay???? When I play Payday, I don't get tazed in real life or have my eyes and ears blown out by a flashbang every time those things happen in game (Payday 2 has this exact accessibility feature by the way it's awesome). If "hardcore gamers" want to keep a tazer on their desk and zap themselves every time they get tazed in game for realism, more power to them, but I personally don't want to experience discomfort while playing a VIDEO GAME meant to be FUN.
Honestly the harsh truth is that a large portion of the "normative" population, especially in gaming, have a huge disdain for anyone different. This isn't accessibility related but I believe it has similar attitudes behind it and is something that I personally hold a stake in: the in-game voice chat discourse in DBD. So I'm a transgender bisexual woman who I will admit, is extremely sensitive (LOVED your point about how being sensitive is this big crime to assholes for some reason). A BIG reason why I find myself unable to get into a lot of multiplayer games is because a LOT of them have voice chat on by default and I don't have the mental energy to deal with that. I get called slurs and get mistreated in my real life, I don't need some rando doing that shit to me during something that's supposed to be entertainment.
I love dead by daylight because you can have as much interaction or as little interaction with the people you play with as you want. I've met some good people and exchanged discords through the game and I've also had the choice to have minimal interaction with toxic people which is awesome. I truly believe that besides the horror genre doing some heavy lifting, this is a BIG reason DBD has a large LGBTQ and Women playerbase. This is one of the few games where we can exist without having to sift through constant abuse. When I bring this up in threads about "why can't we have voice chat in DBD!!!" I constantly get told I want to ruin fun for other people or whatever. I'm sorry that I personally value not getting called a slur more than a novelty that would quickly grow stale and toxic which you can ALREADY experience by loading up a custom with friends in discord. "Uhh mute buttons exist for a reason" Okay but then that opens up even more avenues for people to get angry at you because you're literally putting yourself at a competitive disadvantage by not being on coms, plus, even if you just mute assholes, you still have to sit in a lobby knowing that some dude is still shit talking you, you just can't hear it. That doesn't sit right with me, and as I said I'm sensitive and I'm not going to be ashamed of that.
It's just so frustrating these kinds of attitudes are so popular in gaming circles. Gaming is meant to be FUN and a place to have recreation and relaxation. It should be an inclusive space where everyone can co-exist and enjoy things together but no, god forbid anyone be different. Thanks for making this video and sorry I got ramblely
its ableism. thats it
good video man, hard agree on spirit… bitches whole kit is literally an entire accessability issue. They do need to do something about that
I've seen people be very respectful and ask for reasonable accomodations. Though people lack the ability to understand anything that isn't how their brain works. Here's one, the arachnophobia option in Lethal Company, before it was added the pushback was insane by capital G Gamers. Relentlessly just insulting these people for something they had 0 control over.
People aren't playing horror games to have a damn panic attack, they are playing it for fun!
This might surprise you but there are people who would rather want you to suffer than accept accessibility features in games they play because that makes them feel privileged and better about themselves. This is known as Tolerable Level of Permanent Unhappiness. People with disabilities and conditions are just expected to suffer for the sake of normies having a good time with no obstructions whatsoever. I experienced this myself, as an autistic person I'm often forced to operate in a world that is hostile to me and many people are unwilling to do the mere basics to help me feel welcome. So it's not surprising to me that some people would be hostile to the idea of basic accessibility features. I've been criticizing BHVR for a long time due to their negligence in accessibility features because most of them don't even require that much work. But it's the "it's not so bad" crowd that I have more issues with because they do indeed contribute to general unhappiness of DbD community. The map is too dark? Use filters! You can't? Too bad!
Hypothetically, I wonder if the knee jerk reactions to the changes stem from the extent to which gamers have had to resist the ‘Change your media until it’s something that I personally like!’ movements, that people are unable or just don’t care to see a difference between ‘remove that from your game because I personally dislike it!’ And ‘hey maybe this change will let someone who couldn’t play the game before try it-‘
Accessibility warriors are killing the game
That’s all
Only happens in this game
I think a good idea for an accessibility option for blindness could be called “flashlight dark mode” where instead of it being bright white you get a black fog affect as if the entity is covering ur screen with fog, also the game with the arachnophobia option was called grounded
These are some really good points. I personally love the visual heartbeat and commend all companies that try to make a their game as accessible as possible. A good example of this is the last of us, they even won an award for it at the game awards.
I get the Mori cencoring thing though, clown, unknown, onryo, and singularity's are kinda shocking the first time you see it.
Oh and the Arachnophobia setting i believe was from Hogwarts Legacy
While I agree with accessibility options in games, I don't agree with removing/altering things because of phobias.
I have a fear of spiders, if I'm playing a game which has giant spiders, I have to tough it out to make it through.
Let's say someone has thalassophobia (fear of the deep ocean), should Subnautica add an option that removes the water?
Not trying to be a dick about it, I just can't understand toggling an option instead of getting over your fears and feeling great about it afterwards.
The easiest solution to flashlights is literally just make an option to remove brightness and just blur the screen😅
average dbd community moment
Accessibility in 2024? NOT ALLOWED! /s
Serious note, though, I don't even have a sensitivity to light that I'm aware of and even I think flashlights are a bit over the top. Whether I'm running lightborn or not, my retinas get absolutely seared by the holy light from.. Ah yes, the other side of the map due to the frequent pairing with background player. And it's made substantially worse by certain add-ons or multiple flashlights in my face at the same time.
More accessibility = more players = more diverse matches as new varieties of skill level enter the matchmaking pool. There is not a single downside to letting people play in a way that's comfortable for them.
I have very little hearing on my left ear (since birth) but I havent personally had to use visual heartbeat. Its likely because I usually listen to everything with right side of headset so I move my camera accordingly and terror radius plays on both sides anyway. Also while doing some action like chest or gen, I move my camera around like I would be facing Ghostface. Unfortunately I cannot play against Spirit even with visual heartbeat because her volume blends far too well to other game sounds and you actually require precise hearing against her while she is in her power. For me its just rng fight and its why Spirit is only killer I really hate.
Playing as killer however, I would not mind having some sort of small arrows at edge of screen whenever audio that you can hear plays out. Not the end of world to not have them as I have adapted my whole life to listening differently but would be nice nonetheless.
Behavior should have an option to instead of the killer hitting me and hurting me, they should give me hugs and help me do the gens instead 😢
I completely agree with 90% of the things you said (hard of hearing and colourblind options). However if someone is a 'Gore-a-phobe' they shouldn't be buying and playing a 18+ horror game. Like what do they expect lol
For me i have cronic migraines and blast mine and flashbang 6/10 times triggers it due to how sudden those two perks are so i would love that the screen just goes dark cause damn its rough
As a person with adhd, playing against the Doctor is absolutly painful… the static on the screen, the reversed skill checks and the overwhelming chase music are often way to much to handel for me
My personal opinion is.
Adding accessibility for people who are disabled like you is totally valid.
having some way to not get flash banged or visual cues for audio lets more people enjoy the game.
however…
A phobia and a disability are not the same thing.
If you seriously have a phobia of gore.
why are you playing a game where you're literally killing people.
i get the motion sickness and the light sensitivity.
those are all things that are not in your control and are disabilities
Phobias of spiders and gore and stuff like that could be grown out of.
just close your eyes if anything 😭
anyway thats just my personal opinion.
nice video dude
accessibility options are always welcome if done correctly, you proposed flashlight change works as it doesn't change the core of the game and gives no advantage. however your points on spirits noise or clowns visuals I disagree with. whilst it doesn't help with motion sickness, the visual effect from clown can throw off some survivors and help and if they remove it then it would make clown slightly worse. and with spirit I also don't agree with your idea for the sound indicators, sound indicators would massively tip the scale for spirit as everyone would just know where she is when phasing. yes I know that you can hear where spirit is, but the indicators would just be a huge advantage for survivors. same with indicators for killers, if a survivor was getting ready for flashlight save and were injured, one indicator would ruin it and it would tip the scales to killer… whilst there are good ideas for accessibility changes, they need to be considered and not give any unfair advantages to one side
