Welcome, friends and foes, Survivors and Killers. Today we’ll be taking a long-awaited look at Mikaela Reid, the new Survivor in the Hour of the Witch half-Chapter. We’ll be analysing why Behaviour chose to give her the witch identity, why I don’t think it works for her and what they could have done to give both Mikaela and the witch identity a bit more importance.

  1. I just want to say: I'm sorry if my criticism of the "TikTok witch" cut a little too deep.
I should have been more careful when discussing real beliefs.
What I was trying to go for was more like criticising televangelists: the redressing and exaggeration of faith as a tool to sell stuff, which is what BHVR is doing with Mikaela.
I let my distaste for that element of the story bleed over too much and that's not very fair or professional of me. My apologies.

  2. Speaking as someone just dabbling in witchcraft – While I can understand the “TikTok witch” criticism, I kind of love her witch angle bc a) it’s campy (you just know she’s gonna be called “crystal mommy” or something equally silly) b) her enthusiasm seems to come from a genuine desire to give back to her community which I can root for and c) it blurs the line between fiction and reality well. With her boons, is she actually practicing witchcraft? Or is she some wannabee “tiktok witch” given her power by the entity? I love that it’s been kept vague intentionally so far.

That being said, a multimillion dollar company being like “here’s an original survivor, she does witchcraft, we won’t elaborate much further” feels a bit forced and “how you do fellow kids”

  3. I think they should've made all her perks boon perks just like they did with Hag. Then along with her bring a bunch of new perks that are not teachables, just to emphasize how powerful of a witch she was. It could brought a few more boons that wasn't just radius reliant and some perks that shook up the meta. Probably even bring in new killer perks too to show that her magic was so powerful that it enhanced even the darkness in the realm. It could've more the entire overall lore along like there was finally progress just like the Blight did. Idk I was craving more with this midchapter. We're all waiting for something to happen

  4. as someone who actually practices witchcraft "tiktok witches" make me cringe so hard. There are witches on tiktok that are good people and genuinely love their practices and dont care about the follows and likes, but sadly the fakers and shit get significantly more popular, and people start to believe them more than actual witches. You can channel natural energy, but the MOST it will do is maybe make ur indoor plant live a little longer, it cannot change the weather or amplify wind. Witchcraft is not for show, it is for self-love, connections to nature, self improvement, acceptance etc. They shouldve added something about deities she follows, maybe her shadow-work (a "shadow" is supposed to be negative things. things you need to improve on with yourself. doing witchcraft with a prominent shadow is not a good idea, as the negative feelings can subconsciously affect what you are doing. if you think yourself not good enough, if you doubt what you're doing, no matter how much you ignore it, that is still there in the back of your mind. if you are doing a self-love spell without doing shadow work it will not end well, as the subconscious thoughts of not being good enough can and will effect the result. it would be interesting to see mikaela focusing on that positiveness, especially with the nightmares she was having). she's disappointing in the witch aspect, but i still love her story and especially her style.

  5. I have to disagree on how you bring her up as a bad take on a witch, while zoomers might look at her as a Tik Tok witch, I see her more as a girl like Serah Bailey from The Craft, Sally McKnight/Thorn from the Scooby do and the Witch's Ghost, the Elvira Mistress of Darkness movie, The original tv show Charmed or the Classic Sabrina Teenage witch. A girl who doesn't know she has real magic but is drawn to it and wants to balance her life. In a sense, not like the original witches like you describe, but more of a Wiccan/Wicca type of witch. Her connection to using herbal ingredients to make soaps, love potions and such are more to the nature and elements.

In modern day, we can be multiple things of what we are, we aren't all gamers, we aren't all what we do for our jobs, we also do other things. So for Mikaela to be a cafe palm reader, a witch, and a writer isn't that far off to be. If you are interested, I suggest looking up more on Wiccan/Wicca to understand a bit and see if Mikaela would fit into that more than just a regular classic witch type.

  6. I know I'm not a good writer of any chance, but if I write Mikaela's lore, I'll make her a story teller, a WITCH COSPLAYER and later a prophet of her own life, not "witchy" but a full cosplayer (mostly cosplays her original work, it happens that her current one is a witch). I will keep most of her lore intact, from a young aspiring writer to a barista who does witchy stuff (not because she taught she is a witch but she portray one). And since the entity is pretty much known as force that outside of the fog knows (but she doesn't), she will write a story about knowing the entity (with a protagonist of a witch-like aesthetic and have witch magic) without knowing it's real and some of the people that heard her story that knows the entity exists confronts her. fast forward to the abduction part, the entity somehow gives her magic (boon totems) that what exactly what she wrote for her protagonist character have. yes she is the first person the entity give a "fighting" chance cause she's really not a witch but a prophet of her fate in the hands of the entity.

    sorry with my bad english…

  7. I used to play the hell out of Jeff because I adored his backstory and I enjoy playing characters that everyone tends to forget about to show them love. I really wish the devs would be more willing to add some variety to the characters. It feels like every single survivor we get these days Is just some young, cutsie, girl-boss like pixel claimed. I want some variety!

  8. I'm honestly most surprised by the fact people think Nea is ugly?? This is the first I'm hearing about that, tbh. She's far from ugly, though she's not a super model, she's nowhere near the gremlin old Quinten was!

  9. Thanks, pointing out that a character with kit that gives Killers even more troubles and obligations is "laughable" feels like even more salt in the wound lol

  10. Why don’t we have old ladies? Sexism. She can’t be a ~sexy~ old lady, after all. I’d love to see a legitimately fat-not just curvy like Jane, fat, survivor. But fatphobia holds us back on that, too. And speaking of witches…Tituba from the Crucible, or a witch from Salem! A witch out of medieval times like you mentioned! I’m tired of all the survivors being from modern times. I want to see a survivor pulled from ancient history!

  11. Honestly, I think you're on to something about the attractive characters selling better. But I do wanna quickly say, while Charlotte might not be considered pretty and isnt super popular, for me it's because she has a baby erupt from her chest to a farting noise. I cant actually watch twins gameplay because I'll feel sick. But I get what you're saying 🙂

  12. While I do agree or see the reasoning behind a lot of the points you made in this video, there is one section of the video I disagree with. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but to me, it sounds like you're saying no one plays Jeff and The Twins because they are unattractive, and the only reason people play Nea is because she is free. While I do admit that it may play a part in it, I believe there are other reasons. Jeff, while he may be a good character story-wise, is very loud and tall, so killers can find him easier than other survivors, and his perks are mediocre at best. Add on to that he was part of the Darkness Among Us DLC, which isn't one of the more well-liked DLCs, it is possible that a lot of people just don't have him for that reason. As for The Twins, they had a bug-ridden launch that made a lot of people have a horrible first impression of them, which was not helped by the fact a lot of people used their power for camping (which is a valid strategy for DBD Matches, but it doesn't leave a good taste in people's mouths). As for Nea, I do agree that the whole Entity joke started due to her appearance, but I think the reason it is still around now is not because people find her unattractive, but rather that it's a main part of Samination's Parodies (which does make fun of her appearance, so view that as you will). However, I do see a lot of people play her in my games of DBD, whether or not because she's a free character or people actually like her, I can't say. Now I do agree that BHVR makes a lot of commonly attractive characters, it's what a lot of games do, sex sells after all. However, I don't think it's fair to say people do not play these characters solely because they are unattractive. If I have misunderstood your point, please let me know.

  13. 6:40 I think saying it more as the skin for a Halloween event is fine. But as the default this is her skin definitely not.
I think HP Lovecraft type would've worked too

I think what could of worked for her a bit more would've been tying her story into her writings more. Like she was writing a horror story and went to do some research on "real happenings" in the world of Dbd and came across a few old forgotten texts in some dusty old books store that no one remebers the name of. Then Evil dead style some of these books end up being real and have power and she learns about it all accidentally over time until she releases something that confirms the reality of the magic and thats when the entity takes notice

  14. I mean, I was honestly more hyped that she was a writer, and I completely forgot that she was a witch.
I was on board with the theory that an alternative Lisa comes over, or at least someone from her village she was living in. This was the perfect opportunity, and now that you mention her grandmother, I would have really liked that to be honest. And this would have been such a good story. and maybe we could have expanded upon Lisas Story too, like make it better?

Or maybe a survivor not from the present, I saw someone mentioning it in the comments. FFS if they wanted to sell something, they could have brought out a cute young (african-american) Girl, but like from idk when where the witch huntings? They could have done so much better, maybe a witch girl trying to protect other witches from the people that were hunting them (maybe in Salem even, idk?) and while casting her spells, watching in horror how more and more "witches" were killed, the entity took her. Or something like that, you know, something interesting …

But like enchanting coffee beans and stuff is not really witchy for me, and there is no way, that Mikaela should be able to do something like casting boon totems.

As for Jeff, I got nothing against him, he's a really cool character, but his breathing is just so damn loud. I was so scared, when I played him one time and he breathed into my ear … I hadn't even moved and he was so loud … In generell I play more female characters, because I am fucking bad at the game and I use the small character models to better hide.
But I really wish that Jeff and Adam would get more love again, I don't even know when they had the last original and new cool cosmetics, i mean, all Jeff seems to get this time is a recolor? while Feng is getting two new outfits. Like WHY? I don't get it.

  15. For a while, I thought that the Hag's grandmother would have been a great fit as she'd be the natural contrast to the Hag with the far safer, but far less powerful form of magic that she tries to steer Lisa towards.

Oh, well. Maybe in the next chapter!

  16. Honestly Mikaela is the first character since dwitght who I cannot take seriously at all. Every other survivor has some things to go for them and there you have mr self insert and mrs tik tok witch. I love it from a lore perspective. She is here she does her thing she wanna get out and write awesome stories.

But from an everything else perspective she is irritating. I dont think boons are as op as og mettle of man but I really belive once cirlce of healing will be back in action they would be in the same realm. Her whole appereance especially in the hand of a cocky survivor screams to me, "you dont belong here, get out because you are annyoing". And if a worse suvivor plays her im subconciously like "its mikaela what did I expect". Hell even kate belongs in this realm way more and I can take her seriously. I think the worst offender of all is those comically large googles. LET ME SEE HER EYEBROWS.
