Why I Still Play Dead by Daylight

Every year someone asks the question of why people still play Dead by Daylight. It’s a game which has a lot of success, yet a lot of people equally question that success quite a bit. It’s called buggy, toxic, poorly optimised, unbalanced, and so on.

Please do go check out @Rapidmain and the video this video answers the question of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tfx2wVmDu-s&t=0s

At the time of this video’s release Chapter 34 has been revealed on the PTB, named Doomed Course, with new Killer The Houndmaster, and Survivor Taurie Cain.

  1. Reasons I still play DBD is that it's the only game where I can play as my favorite horror movie villains whenever I want, I love the lore and I enjoy the creative cosmetics that are put out for all playable characters. I just wish there was a way to seperate the casual players from the overly competitive players. I play DBD to have fun and mess around. I don't like it when people take the game too seriously and act toxic to random people. If I play killer I often spare those who wear Iron Maiden shirts, make me laugh or help with dailies. If I am playing survivor I try not to drop every pallet I see or flash the killer too much because I know how annoying it is to have that done to me.

  2. Destiny 2, League of Legends, Dead by Daylight, and etc. are all just games that you have to learn to love and hate, and they will never be good or great games, their just games that exist and to each their own if anyone likes or enjoys them and wishes to play them.

  3. With the concept of “Casual or Competitive” I like the aspect of competitive but not DBD comp if that makes sense? Like when I play, I use the builds I make, the addons or items I think are good, the perks that I like, and then I try to WIN. DBD comp to me is a little idiotic, especially the 1v1’s because it tries to put a 4v1 game into an even playing field when the 1 (killer) is supposed to have a distinct advantage. So I like using the builds etc as a killer main to try and win, nothing else. And I like the rules given to me by the game, not given to me from the community.

  4. the chase is what keeps me playing. The strategy, the tactics, even the basic 50/50s that continuously happen during a chase are extremely fun, I constantly throw matches just to have fun chasing whoever the hell is the best in that lobby.

The only thing that honestly irks me in DBD is map offerings, I absolutely hate them and I will hunt down the bastard that sends players to a map, as almost every single time it's to bully the killer or to be a asshole wifh a specific build (like boil over on eyrie)

  5. I think some of the biggest problems of Dead By Daylight are two main things; Isolation, and the fact that there is nothing else much to do. The lore is heavy, and plenty. But they don't do MUCH with it. Like, if you were to compare this game's characters to other games with fleshed out characters, DbD feels like it does nothing with the cast. It's strange that my mains (being Clown and Slinger) basically has no voice lines, or any kind of interactivity. I want to know MORE, I want some of these characters to interact, especially from Killer-to-Killer. There's a lot of decent chemistry that could happen. But it's all scraps, all because the game was designed to be vague for horror reasons. Like characters being wiped of their memories so every trial is a fresh nightmare, or to make sure their souls don't die out. Like the Sally and Philip relationship is a great idea, but it doesn't go anywhere beyond implication. And for people when they invest so much time into the lore and story, it seems like a let down. And for a less of a reason to stay.

  6. I will be honest I highly disagree with the community not being toxic. I've never seen a community literally hate an entire half of the player base on both sides for no reason other than skill issues. This game is amazing but the people who play it need to get a reality check

  7. I 100% agree w you about the toxicity. I play on console so I’ve never experienced end game chat admittedly, but I interact w the community constantly in game and out. I’m a pinhead main and I’ve gotten far more compliments and ggs after a game. Communities I’ve been apart of as much as dbd, like r6seige and for honor are far FAR more toxic. I lub dbd and its community 🩷

  8. like you said, variety. different perk loadouts for survivors offer different gameplay tactics, and every killer is so different to play. if i’m bored as one, i can switch to the other.
as much as people complain, i don’t think dbd is as toxic as people say at all. the devs also do a lot to actively prevent toxicity. speaking of, the devs are communicative, and the game receives constant updates. i think dead by daylight is great and too many people complain

  9. As a player who has stopped playing DBD and has chosen not to pick it back up, I have experienced quite alot with the game as i did play it for a few years before quitting. I did like that the game does have quite alot to choice from a variety of options to pick from, but at least with my games, over time it did start to suffer from meta sameness condition. Almost every game I played was the same on the selection perks and addons and different only in player execution. I purposely tried to change up my build to experience new things, but it got to a point where I could basically guess at least 3 of the 4 perks of a killer just by who it was and be right about 70% of the time just cause those perks were the meta picks. I experienced quite alot of just bad manners and bad behavior both in game and post chat to eventually push me to not even stick around to see post game results. I think as far as poor balancing and bugs go that those are pretty well established and talked about enough as is to go down that road. I know its an online game and some of these things you just have to expect from players in an online environment but understanding this is ultimately what lead me to quit me playing when it really dawned on me that I wasn't having fun and I was asking myself why i continued knowing im not having fun. I still watch and stay current with the game as its develops to current day. I don't think I would play again myself, but I can appreciate how the game has and continues to develop overtime and the developer looks to improvement as they go forward.

  10. I play the game because it's fun, and unique. I don't care how much unbalanced it is, (although I want them to balance poor stuff), I don't think toxic community is game's fault, and bugs will happen on any game.

  11. I played this game for quite a number of years already, since The Clown was announed and the first BBQ event.

First, "community" you have not played enough to see toxic Survivors and there is a difference between mindset to win and trying to win.

Second, improves only on Content and unnecessary changes to many things, therefore they barely fix real problems and you can not call "Survivor Op counter Killer Op" is balance because Otz has pointed out a lot of issuee of the game.

Finally, after years of making a lot of progress of understanding the game and seeing a vast number of changes, then i do want to see how this game will do in its sequel title "Dead by Daylight II" because that will determine how the end results after all this time.

  12. i still play the game after nearly 4000 hours because… I enjoy the game, go figure… i love it to pieces and i think there is nothing like it, even with the others like identity v or killer clowns or whatever. dbd is very special and is actually well made and runs well, all things considered.

  13. i agree with all your points in this video, and I even found the game under similar circumstances, i was the furthest thing from a horror enjoyer and online only games were a big no no for me. but i tried it and fell in love straight away and i still play 5 years later. not too many games have such replay value like this

  14. The dbd community is one of the most toxic community I ever saw. For 800 hour's in dbd I have much more negative comments in my steam profile than I have for playing 2600 hour's in Dota 2 and 700 hour's CS Go. Idk, maybe in other platforms the situation is better. So why I'm still playing? Dbd is still feels fresh and content creators are involved people, no matter is it lore or game updates :3 Maybe someday I will switch to Identity V or try something else.
