Why is Dead By Daylight so toxic? There is so much discourse in the community about Toxic Killers or Toxic Survivors, but I believe the true answer lies somewhere in the middle, and that we’re all part and parcel to the DBD Toxic community.
In this video, I give a brief overview of Toxicity in Dead By Daylight, as well as it’s root causes, backed up from a study done by the University of Quebec in Montreal. I also attempt to answer how we can fix it or change it, coming to a shocking conclusion at the end about the state of Dead By Daylight in 2023

I mean hey, at least it's not FGC. They can get as vicious as old school lobbies sometimes.
I'm currently watching the video so I'm sure there will be some overlap.
But as someone who has played since 2016 I think I have a few ideas.
Dead by daylight YouTubers that were content farming being toxic. I definitely think it played a hand in it because a lot of people tried to mimic it.
Fun strategies just being deemed toxic to the other side. Flashlight saves and head on tends to piss off killers for some reason and they always want to take revenge on the next guy even if they're completely innocent.
MMR being added, Even if matchmaking isn't really that much better than it used to be everyone's mentality on it changed because now everyone thinks they have to sweat and play likes scumbags in order to win.
Other than that now it's just a recurring cycle because if someone gets wronged everyone has to get even.
I've even met people that think they're helping by tunneling because if they keep tunneling then the devs will fix it.
The biggest problem is the segregation of the roles. I think in a casual match players that wouldn't usually play killer should be swapped into the role killers that don't play Survivor should have to play some matches as survivor because the current model allows for us to choose one and call it a day. The 2 million BP on grade reset from completely maxing each role is not enough incentive for players to come over.
Play for honor if you want toxicity
I don’t believe you have only 386 subs.
The video is definitely made by someone with actual EXPERIENCE in the field.
I'm playing dbd nearly two years now, hitting 4k hours and player level 20 soon. 90% survivor, killer is just not my role. Yes, gens can be boring besides events but its kind of okay for me. I don't really get much toxicity and i am definitely not a sweaty gamer, beside that the few rounds that are not fun can ruin the whole experience and stick longer in my head than other rounds. I play on console, so i dodge most toxic communication due to the lack of pre and endgame chat. Beeing hardcore tunneld out of a game sucks, so does facecamping and if the majority of killers on the day do this i consider playing something else. But most of the times if you are not bming the other side is chilled. I usually tend to think "maybe the killer is just fed up from previous games and needs to get rid of frustration or complete a task" and dont take it personally. I think thats the point – dont take it too serious and move on to the next round. If you get to frustrated than take a break. Try to be nice and maybe ask why the other side play a certain way if possible, try to understand the choices the other player makes. If i am toxic and bm or write insults i will get it back, thats logic.
Overall i think if you go into a game of dbd with a good mood and casual mindset it is better for all. The lack of ingame communication can be countered with perks like kindred or the new hud changes. I personally wont use an ingame chat, i couldnt focus on all sounds and so on, also i am german with okay english knowledge but the language barrier would be a thing.
I think a casual an a ranked mode would be the better option.
I notice that most players tend to sweat if rank reset is near and are more chilled during events.
Basically. Noones able to handle losing. Thats all. Ppl lose and try find something to whine about.
Killers cry about bully squads
Survivor cry about camping or tunneling
Yet despite all that everyone is still doing their obj. Camping killers are killing survivors.
Bully squads waste the killers time so others can do gens.
In the end if the day everyones doing what they have to to win.
People just cant handle losing and blame everything except the sinple fact the enemy is better
On the voicechat in the game: no, you don’t want that to be toggled on.
You cannot fix what does not want to be fixed. But you can fuel.
I don’t know about you, but I know about me. I have to deal with lots of nationalistic slurs due to my country of origin, I don’t want to even have a chance to HEAR that. That’s the number one reason I evade games like Valorant (which I really like looking from the side): I am not ready to deal with it.
That’s it. I won’t even be touching the balance side of things, just this one.
Great vid man. Deserving of more subs for sure, and you’ve got mine
I have been playing for years I have had nothing but good experiences 90% of the time. I had no idea things were this toxic
I would personally have to disagree that DbD is toxic, this is from the perspective fo someone who plays both sides however I gravitate more towards playing killer. The reason I disagree that the community is as toxic as people make it out to be is the fact that majority of the community defines toxicity as actions that happen within matches, actions that are intended by design.
I don't believe the community should see tbagging, tunneling, chasing the killer, camping and all these other things as toxic because at the end of the day practically most of these things don't benefit the other side one bit if you know what you are doing, yes these are considered "bm"(bad mannering) but bm itself is rather healthy to a competitive environment. I am not calling dbd competitive in the sense as it is a serious game and you must play every game as if your life depends on it, however competitive in the sense that one side vs the other.
The only exception to my take of in game actions not beint toxic is when people knowingly exploit bugs or unintended mechanics or cheat, those are toxic. End game chat is completely different story if they start calling you names and hurling offensive terms then yes that is toxic.
The proper way to defeat "toxicity" in this community is really by adopting a much healthier mindset. As killer if survivors tbag me I ignore them since they usually tend to be confident and want your attention if they tbag in end game it doesn't matter to me, why should it?
If you're up against a "bully squad" then play accordingly, usually it's 3 people chasing you and 1 gen jockey, when you down someone kiss a wall as you pick them up, or if it's relatively in the open fake a pickup and look around or just slug both give you added pressure. Don't fall for a cj tech you see it from a mile away usually start with them pretending to blind you then vaulting the pallet, don't fall for it just grab them off the pallet. All of these things are preventable by nature.
As a survivor, if you're being tunneled take it as an opurtunity to brush up on your looping skills, connecting things, take it as a learning oportunity and if you're good enough being tunneled may still get you killed but the killer still loses because the other 3 survivors escape and by bhvrs definition that is a loss for killer.
If you're being camped then don't resort to trying to get out the game take it like a champ and force the killer to sit there for two whole minutes, assuming your team knows the right thing to do they will do gens and bam 3 escapes killer lost.
Yes for these two on the survivor side you still lose mmr because regardless how many get out if you die your mmr is on the line not your teammates, keep in mind tunneling and camping killers are not every single game you play, and those that say every game is a tunneler or camper or both is in mad need for copium.
The end of it all the main driving problem behind dbds issues is the devs they refuse to listen to actually criticism n only listen to one side for balance that bein survivors n even then not even the best survivors that know all off dbds faults n exploits but new players that are still learning n think everything is too hard n they refuse to add other objectives n game modes even tho tons of streamers n players have voiced great ideas on forums they don’t give a shit cuz they have no competition they can get away it n basic say stfu n give us yo money for these skins n shitty new killers
For the love of god put proximity chat in dbd. it would be a 1000% a better game also I dont believe this game is abnormally toxic i mean look at the cess pit that is free to play games lmao or old cod lobbies. Golden age of cod where people would say the most outlandish shit but it was cool
As someone that has played off and on since 2017-18 and has played on several different systems, it is heartbreaking to leave a community you love in order to be happier. Here's hope for the future
I'll honestly never understand why teabagging bothers people. As a killer I could care less, (though flashlight clicking drove me bonkers, but I just ignored those survivors) but I play in the party mode style, so maybe that's why. I just wish people would stop taking the game so seriously and just have fun.
I will agree that your video style is great and you make some good points. Here are some of my problems with the games mindset. #1 Toxicity is subjective. What might bother one person might not bother another. #2 Not to complain about your playtime but you just started and said you read a study from a university that took their stats based off of reddit post. #3 You say the game needs voice chat and didn't want to hear arguments about it but earlier in the video complained about 12 yr olds in COD lobbies yelling and cursing. I've been playing DBD since 2018 right after Plague came out. I play both Survivor with my wife and Killer when i'm solo. You will get those occasional toxic in game chat players after the game. Those are real toxic people. How someone chooses to play the game is not toxic it's free will. I really wish we could stop acting like kids and whining and crying over everything and just play and enjoy the game for what it is.
“Killers play unfairly”- entitled toxic survivors
I might sound weird, but with +100% BPs on killer, I just play killer. I hook everyone twice and let everyone escape. I get mostly same or more points as survivors.
Yes, my MMR is probably low (I don't care), yes I maybe play against newer/bad players (I don't care, I play to practice with killers)
.. but at the end, when everyone escapes, people are nice in chat and the only one angry is "the entity [that] hungers".
At the end, its enjoyable for everyone except the entity…
…And I like it that way. Am I weird?
slzBang
a nice coment
Here from SpookyLoopz <3 lovely video and look forward to seeing more of your content!
Yeah I don't even leave discussions on the dbd forums anymore, because it seems like if you leave a opinion about something, especially in my opinion about killers, people will insult you, call you dumb and get upset from an opinion and if you say anything close to be offensive, you get banned and as far as chat, I feel like you should be able to mute anyone that's being toxic as well
great video man, so true on every point and such a sound and logical explanation for each point!!
You gave an example of COD lobbies and showing how toxic people can chat there. Now imagine allowing voice chat in this game. I wonder what would happen when a vile person is given a live mic in this game. Imagine all the terrible stuff they could say while in a chase.
