Did DBD's Alien Chapter Fail?

Dead by Daylight’s Alien chapter has been out for 3 months and now that we’re ready to move on to the Chucky/Child’s Play chapter, it’s time to ask… did the Alien chapter kinda sorta fail? It seems like a wild thing to even ask, but there are certainly those who either didn’t like the chapter or who think the numbers surrounding it were underwhelming. Did Xenomorph and Ripley fail? Let’s talk about it.

  1. haven't watched the video in full yet, but I do want to state that Xbox / Playstation has the highest playerbase, as gaming PCs are still not as common as consoles. Most people on console are also the causal players, which is the most important part of DBD's playerbase in terms of money and popularity.

  2. The game in its current is simple not fun for anyone that is a normal person that just wants to play the game. Until the devs fix the core issues with the games gameplay loop no one killer or surv can bring 9 to 5 people back. This game is a breeding ground for rich trolling scum. Normal people dont have the time for this nonsense. Youtubers and TTVs have farmed this community into the ground and fail to see that thier insane greedy behavior is what is driving people away. They cant gaslight us with the skill issue qoute when they can just buy every character they need. This game is for whale trolls enough said 😂😂😂😂🎉

  3. I think a lot of the reason is that the game is just slowing down. It's not even remotely close to dying and is obviously still an absolute money printing machine, but DBD is a game that requires a massive investment of time and (for most people) money, on top of having a large roster of killers, perks, and maps to learn that only grows larger with every chapter release. It has to be ridiculously overwhelming for a new player.

  4. Its not about the chapters why people are leaving. People are leaving because people that play killer atleast a good 1/3 of them are cheating. Then we have all these TTV players that coordinate with a killer to orchestarte a game, and sometimes it appears to be blatant, and unnatural.

  5. Im still trying to prestige alien to p100, ill admit i was hoping for sigourney weaver but ill take the ripley either way. Its also why i was suprised they got the original voice actors for chucky/tiffany – that feels like a complete package. The alien was done great but i still feel awkward playing ripley sometimes

  6. As someone who has waited for this license since before the Resident Evil chapter was even a sparkle in Matthew Cote's eye and mains Ripley and Xeno? My literal only complaint is how absolutely uncounterable Xeno is in chase. People like to mention faking pallets/windows or the flamethrowers but realistically no good Xeno is getting knocked out of their power by the turrets. No good Xeno is falling for the fakes and even if they do? They can still slide the hitbox to the side and sometimes still hit you. I want Xeno to be more interactive for both sides. So far it's just a huge stomp unless the survivors have incredible gen efficiency, which they often don't.

I'd like the tail attack to be reactable and have more punish to it. Maybe even give it a meter like Nemmy that builds up and maybe even tie THAT to the turrets. Like getting knocked out loses you a tier but every tail hit gains you one. Make it so Xeno gets a smaller TR with every Tier and longer reach with the tail. That way there's more back and forth with the power and Xeno has to actually fear the flamethrowers rather than laughing at them. Even if you get knocked out of the power you can just hop in your tunnel for 5 seconds to go interrupt a gen and bam power back and no punish.

  7. Loss in player count was 100% TCM and event burn out. I remember grinding anniversary event so hard I didn't wanna play the game for a couple of months. The only time I booted up dbd after the BBQ and Anniversary was for Xeno, but then I went back to TCM the next day since it was so much more new and fun at that time. If Alien was the Anniversary Killer it wouldn't have had the same numbers, i guarantee it.

  8. At a certain point, no amount of license hype can make up for the game being poorly balanced and not fun.

They need to rework several killers to be more fun to play against, rework several maps, rework perks on both sides (they just addressed MFT, but on the killer side Ultimate Weapon and Pentimento come to mind), and fix things like slugging and possibly overall gen speed.

The game just has huge parts of it that are extremely unfun, and poorly designed. Plain and simple. Also frankly we need more map variety. Nostromo was a breath of fresh air, but we need more.

  9. I personally think it's more of a state-of-the-game issue than something wrong with this chapter, plus outside factors. The game can just feel really annoying right now with the MFT spam, FTP + Buckle Up + Power struggle being really popular for a bit and practically impossible to counter, and the alien's locker perk being so easy to use. The aliens power is also very similar to nemesis' power where you can hit over loops and pallets, which seems to be annoying to quite a few survivors, but imo is more difficult to use because the hit box seems smaller, your pov gets lower when you crouch which makes it harder to see your target, and should you miss it feels like you have to wait until holiday season 2023 for your tail to be ready again (that may just be me, im ass with the tail attack), and if you're waiting that long on the other side of a loop, the survivor is just gonna hold w with MFT to another pallet. Plus TCM released recently and has a similar player base, Baldurs gate 3 dropped in the same month as this chapter and is very popular, Assassins creed released the following month, and the new COD is releasing and we all know no matter how horrible it is, plenty of people are gonna buy it and play it for 3 months, and those releases take time and money away from dbd and the new chapter. As you said, the game is a live service and having drops/rises in the player count shouldn't be particularly surprising.

  10. I think one of the main issues you didn’t bring up is the pricing. Compared to every other dbd chapter that are $7 alien chapter is $12. Every other chapter that’s $12 has a lot of bang for their buck bringing 3 characters and 9 perks so you get a LOT of value out of it but what do you get for the alien chapter that warrants the extra $4? A skin. Literally just a skin for one character. Like for me personally I don’t wanna play ripley (not that she’s a bad character I just prefer others) I spend another $4 on a skin i will literally NEVER USE. Sure the dlc is a big license but I don’t wanna spend $4 more dollars for something I don’t want and get even less perks than say the other big licenses. For $12 you can get: Stranger things and either of the resident evil dlcs which are PHENOMENAL chapters that bring 3 characters and more perks. But instead you get less for more and even if you wanna skip doing that you have to spend $10 if you JUST want the characters because $5 for a single character in auric cells. So you either spend $12 for 2 characters and a mid skin or $10 for just the characters compared to LITERALLY every other 2 character chapter being $7 which is a huge issue.

And a side unrelated thing is you bring up the sadako chapter which I also agree was kinda a flop but that was because they announced her chapter like 2 months before her release which MASSIVELY nukes ANY hype. Every time a chapter is coming the community starts getting crazy going oh is it gonna be fnaf or candyman or XYZ but for sadako they just outright said here she is more info in 2 months which is a huge bummer and makes people not as excited compared to say recently the Chucky chapter rn cause people thought it could be predator or fnaf.

  11. The problem for me has been the following:

Killer gameplay: mft/all the endurance hits you have to play around. Certain maps that lack hooks on second story and they bring boil over/the boon to get up (this is always against a swf. The matches are just wait for them to bleed out). One chase (after finding someone after the team has been sneaking around) leading to 3 gens popping simultaneously. A few other things i cant think of atm.

Survivor gameplay: mft felt needed for lower tier players (me included). If you arent running a loop perfectly, then you just die in 10 seconds. Ultimate weapon is wayyyy too strong. Matching up with others that cant loop (especially since im not very good as well) usually leads to a loss at 5 gens. No ultimate weapon nerf. Blindness being devastating to solo que while having much less impact on swfs kinda sucks… wish they gave basekit bond and something that lit gens up (kinda like deja vu when another survivor sees them at least once for solo que players (to bring solo que closer to swfs calling out gens) as well as something to tell which pallets are being thrown and where. These changes would also need something to help killer players from being snowballed as well, but its at least a start to bringing both in line. No ultimate weapon nerf??? And lastly, something better than this current skill check system we have atm… you can be a sliver off and its a coin flip whether it wants to miss or hit. Sometimes the skill checks spam you (getting 3 instant fastest skill checks after failing one is just horrible).

Both: i would like better lighting and actual lighting options ingame. Its cool to want a "specific dark experience" and all, but playing in a room that has a lot of light makes it really tough to see anything… the worst offender is yamaoka. Cant see a single thing on the map. Pair it with dredge, and i just sit on gen uncaring if he is coming or not since i cant tell where Im going in the first place

  12. Doctor gordon is a deciple of jigsaw like amanda and the reason amanda and tapp were chosen is because while tapp wasnt in the greater scheme he is still iconic, the reason amanda over kramer is because john had a morals and he really doesnt like innocents getting harmed only those guilty and guilty by blood/relation when he messed up he pulled the guy out and stitched his wound, while i agree hoffman would have been a better killer mandy is far more psycotic and emotional perfect for feeding the entity do i think thecsaw chapter makes perfect sense and us more if a loveletter to those who actually watch and pay attention

Sorry about any typos its 3 am im sleepy as hecc and shaky

  13. The issue with this video is that the perspective is very isolated. It doesn't take into account new games that came out. That's probably where the players went. The alien didn't flop because I can guarantee that 70-90% of those who still play dbd bought the dlc and the reception around them were pretty good. Sure it lost 10000 players but they're probably all playing Baldurs gate

  14. This chapter was the chapter that brought me back to the game and I’m on ps4 I haven’t played since the death slinger came out and I love the alien series for me this chapter was a success

  15. it didn’t fail but it feels.. meh.. the power (aside from the tunnels) is the most plain and boring thing ever created. it’s also super infuriating and it’s hitboxes are so messed up. the map looks gorgeous but it would have costed them nothing to make it more “movie” oriented. it feels like playing on a generic alienish map with some spaceship debree. the perks are ok, I could see them buffing them cause omg aside from the locker perk of the killer the rest feels so weak. thankfully the survivor perks are nice. but yeah, could have done it better imo

  16. I think Alien is just not nearly as popular as it once was. Sure, older folk and horror fans look at it fondly, but there are really hasn't been a good film in the series since Aliens in 1986. Stranger Things was at the height of its popularity when its chapter released, and Resident Evil has been getting a ton of solid remakes and new releases these past couple of years. Makes sense why their chapters were hits while Alien failed.

  17. I'm a 2016 week 1 player, been on and off from the game, and Alien is my 2nd favorite killer yet so naturally I'm biased but I do see the trend of people highly anticipating a chapter, plays it for a couple of weeks and then are over it and waiting for the next thing.

Also, Light-Footed isn't only decent for stealth playstyle but also when running Flashbang and that kinda stuff and the killer not being able to as easily pinpoint your location after breaking LoS on a wall is alright too. Nothing crazy but I think it's a pretty neat perk.

  18. I didn't know the xeno was considered a failure overall, but it was for me already, I'm a killer main, the maps are good, the perk are good, ok so what? As much as I like this thing I don't need new map, and I have a millions other strong perk to use. Do you know what I need? Cool killer with strong power, and the xeno has a clunky and boring power that not only work only in very specific situation but can also be completely removed by survivor forcing you to choose Between loosing your power or your chase, and all justified by the "but he has a 24m tr" wow how about you make it a 32m tr but you remove the stupid turrets and make the tail more accurate? But nah we have a ranged attack that only work on pallet and window(sometimes), personally I left a week after the xeno release cuz I was already bored, I'm back now but still playing xeno doesn't feel good at all

  19. I think there's a couple of factors for viewing this as a potential failure. Like you said, people were sort of annoyed with the state of the game at that point, and with Texas Chainsaw coming out at the same time people had somewhere else to go and something else to play with different game mechnics, something fresh and new and the chpater itself wasn't enough to bring people back or bring people in. I think it's safe to say the two Resident Evil chapters and Silent Hill brought in more players because they were game licenses. Gamers are more likely to try a game using their favourite characters, whereas movie licences aim itself towards cinema fans that aren't necessarily gamers themselves.

For me, I definitely think the power could have been better. When it was announced I think a fair few people were expecting some kind of power that utilised the facehugger, and instead we got, as you said, a better version of the Demogorgon. So while visually you were playing against a Xenomorph, it didn't and still doesn't quite FEEL like you're palaying against it.

  20. I was disappointed. They did what they always do and buffed killer from PTB to live and overtuned her to sell as much as possible, then inevitably she was nerfed to be a bit more appropriate for counterplay. I respect that they had to work to add tunnels to 36 maps and its an interesting idea, but we need to stop trying to get a new license of some sort every three months and do an Operation Health on the game and make sure that things are actually balanced and fun – I think the overall reason why people are leaving the game in droves is because they keep making these bizarre changes and additions without really thinking it through. The game is becoming less fun the more bloated it gets and I think they need to consider where this is going long term to ensure its not just more balanced, but more fun.

  21. This was my most wanted chapter by far and I have to admit that I’m disappointed. For me the power is the issue. It’s not even that it’s overpowered, it just doesn’t feel like alien. In the first and second movies the alien(s) never once use their tail to attack, it was the AVP movies that retconned the aliens to have a sharp tail. The tunnel system is awesome but the tail attack is just a ripoff nemesis. I wish the alien was either a pure stealth killer or something really agile and fast. Also in the movies the alien is very rarely on all 4 legs unless it’s in vents.

  22. Keep in Mind MFT was increasingly prevalent and hated during this time. Few chapters would make people want to play against a perk that over a quarter of players are using, and that makes half the chases 20% longer. I think the drop in players will mostly subside now that the nerf was announced

  23. Being the target of survivor vitriol doesn't mean it failed, it's Tuesday. Survivors constantly claim the only fun killers to go against are Michael and Trapper. Two of the worst, wonder why. Xenomorph is fine, killers need to burn the rulebook. The hemorrhage of players started long before Alien dropped, I don't think we can say the preexisting trend means the chapter failed.

Watch, people are hyped for Chucky now but wait for him to drop. Survivors will complain endlessly that he's OP, he'll get nerfed into mediocrity. Dbd will return to the same routine until the next cycle of hype. Make a highly requested killer cool and strong, build hype, sell day 1, nerf later. This isn't sustainable no matter who they get as a license or even who they add as an original

    Edit:
Yeah, Ulti Weapon needs a nerf. I'm normally not pro knee jerk nerfs for alot of things but if MFT is getting the kneecap treatment then UW deserves it too. Both are problematic

  24. I'm waiting to see if they release Hannibal Lecter with Clarice Starling, hopefully with Anthony and Jodi doing voices and likenesses. Also, where's Andy Barclay as a survivor for the Chucky chapter? Anyways, DBD is a lot of fun, but you just can't please everyone 💯
