In this DBD video we’re going to take a look back to see how BHVR’s refusal to address horrible map and loop design early on has ruined the current version of the game in 2024. It’s a cascade of problems and of course SBMM has made it all even worse.

bro..maps have nothing to do with player retention. the game is boring…period. how many generators do you have to press space on and how many times do you have to run around a rock to get bored? even if they somehow get new people into the game, none of them stay invested for a long time because it is boring. the only variety is in perks and killers. but even so… those can only get you so far.
they could fix the game by enabling chat for survivors in solo queues
You’re right about what makes the game unfun (being forced to play every match like a comp match or you’re throwing) but it’s not maps or even anti gameplay killers that cause it, it all leads back to sbmm, and coconut is right, as long as the devs have a huge ego about removing something they “worked hard on” their game will slowly die
It’s unfortunate that the developers seemingly have a callous attitude to a lot of genuine feedback. It’s because dbd is truly a game of its own that no other games pose a threat that’ll actually force them to listen to us
The problem is, gen rush meta is here to stay. If bhvr does rework the maps, then they'll need to rework anti loop killers too. I've moved on to TCM. It isn't perfect but every match isn't a sweat fest & I am not frustrated & drained even if I "win". Lastly, I'm glad to see you not calling for someone to be canceled in this video.
I've always thought that dbd's map design was a whole new level of terrible, but dbd's been recently hurting for other things also. Mostly, the completely bland and uninspired perk design they're having. Perks are a great way to create new and interesting avenues for gameplay but the perks have been feeling like the same shit over and over again and now Alan Wake's on the ptb with another bunch of dissapointing perks. We got an oasis of light in an another wise sea of shit with Nic Cage but I don't know why they can't keep that up with original perk design. One would thing the more time passes the more creative perk design would become as they would have to push boundaries, but nope. Only two perks this year pretty much entered the meta. Ultimate weapon, which is horribly overpowered and impactful for how boring it is, and plot twist which is genuinely cool and unique. And they also reworked buckle up and turned it into another bland, uninspired perk.
100% the reason I left was the community itself. Once it got so competitive and all about bullying the other side I left the game behind as it feel the fun goofy matches and fun has been squeezed out of the game by both the devs (maybe they dumb and did not intend this) and the community (You know who you are…Mr./Mrs. "1v1 me at shack bro") and this applies to both killer as well as survivor.
Well for one, there's no advertising. I only find out about anything from content creators.
So, killer sided maps good?
I can't endure more than one hour of killer gameplay on average nowadays, the experience is just too damn stressful. Mapdesign is truly horrendous in this game; if I see shit like the Knight, Artist, Dredge, SAW or Singularity map I outright disconnect. There's no point in playing on these sort of maps.
spoiler – they will not fix dbd, because they dont know how. Even forum community dont know how. People just dont understand what is making frustration from the game.
Maybe i dont know too, what is majority problem of the game. Mine problem is premature end of the match.
I would change dbd so that survivors are not killed. Hooking them would just be a slowdown mechanic, and hooked surv would be teleported somewhere far from killer, and automatically unhook after X seconds if noone bothered to do that. Mories could do the same except surv cannot be "unmoried" and have to wait those X seconds wandering on a map being invisible and with no collision.
Game should have time limit, and either survs will manage to repair all gens within this time limit, then they won and killer is consumed by the Entity, if they dont… they became consumed. Either way somewone is dead by daylight (did i mentioned that trials should be in night and time is counting untill daybreak?).
That rework could be great start but it would of course need additional alterations like number of gens, gen repari time, additional challanges etc.
NGL I understand these IP's are hype, but for boomers for boomers…
god this game only gets worse and worse, love ya man. keep hanging in there
A sad but true analysis I feel. All the more sad, if you love playing the game. Some say the game is in its best place now. But, I have to disagree. For me the pinnacle of progress was in early 2021. The fairly radical changes from there and the choices in killer design, since then, have I think took the game backwards. At the same time, its promoted a lazy form of killer play, using a fistful of meta in every game as well, that everyone has access too since 2021.
At a high enough mmr the game feels like a second job.
I swap between killers and moved on from my favorite legion, because the mmr on them is so high that every match is a stressful mess.
Hope they remove the hyper competetive part of mmr and matchmaking becomes casual again, much more fun
Also: plants, grass and stealth options
Also, dbd sucks at retaining new players, because new players are shit on by the matchmaking system, so even huge license will not bring anything long term. Before, rank 20s played against other low ranks: now, new players are paired against people with thousands of hours sometimes.
We have enough maps at the moment, creating more maps is not necessary for variety.
DBD Coldwin farm (orange and horror ambiance) before de rework was my favorite ! But all maps before thé reworks was good..
Theres a reason why the vets keep going back to Mac Estate and Azarov's….
The dredge is a broken ass killer. He has way too many abilities
How is ormond a survivor sided map? There’s no loop outside the main building and shack
Map design is an issue true but the biggest issue is ppl being entitled. SBMM has nothing to do with it. You will not win very game unless you're a sweaty nurse or blight. Ppl cry saying they want side objectives so it not a gen repair sim so they add Pinhead and Sadako but then they cry because they don't want to learn them or deal with the side objectives. It's not hard with no perks n' soloq to get good results against every killer but the top few if ppl just take the time to get good and not give up.
Best designed maps are Coal Tower 1 and Hawkins. Before ppl cry that Hawkins is killer sided learn to play weak pallets… Hawkins is small but has a lot of pallets and most of them playable so it promotes skilled gameplay. It also is map that disfavor top tier killers like nurse and blight but favor low tier making the killers closer in strength.
Lack of vision of their own game, they have no clue about what the game need. Take MFT for example, since the PTB was obvious that perk was busted as hell but no matter the feedback it went live and was untouched for months. Why ? Money of course, they needed to sell the chapter. Same goes with Alien and Ultimate Weapon and now, with Alan Wake they are doing the same with the busted flashlight perk.
Then cheater issue ( and that's why i left the game after 4.5k hours ), BHVR do zero to stop cheating, there's not even an hardware ban in game
ANd as you said terrible map design, and the rework are even worse ! Garden of Joy was hilarious, they just added an useless breakable wall and left everything else unchanged, same goes for Ormong, it's even more survivor sided.
BHVR have no idea what to do anymore, and mark my words, the new game modes they want to introduce are going to be the final nail on the coffin
I feel the pain in this video im not a skillled killer i enjoy running the same few builds now imagine my surprise when i go from matches my skill level to every team is gen Rushing, boil over/ sabo, or chase juicers that are clearly outside of my league almost every match. I used to play both sides but I'd rather play by myself in customs then even touch a public lobby with how sweaty and cruel survivors are lately. And its not just survivors killers have to become cruel assholes just to level the playing field. Im a long time fan and i cant even smile when my dream license is added let that sink in. Either way i love your videos choy i hope someone in behavior is listening. Ps skull merchant main who runs a purely chase build though near non existent we do exist.
in my honest opinion. I think the games biggest issue right now is lack of gameplay modes. I just get burnt out of the gameplay loop of doing generators and hooking survivors for the 4k. We've had the same mode for so long and have optimized TF out of it on both sides.
What would make me come back is something new to do. They have an amazing cast of characters, and a great playground of maps to implement some truly amazing game modes. Its fun roleplaying as your favorite killers from your favorite horror films, or being chased by your favorite horror icons with a survivor you love. However, They can add new characters , perks and maps all they want, but in the end its the same gameplay I'm burnt out on, not the characters. I do agree map design is a big issue, but I disagree with it being the number one issue.
I just wish there was a little more "ambition" with the game. Instead of playing it safe with retaining the game modes that made them popular, to branch out into other modes for the game. Maybe behavior should just make Dead By Daylight 2. so they can rebuild the game from the ground up to make implementing things not take years.
Rest in peace viktor, since now his hitbox is literally behind him so he can't launch over things
Thank you for seconding what coconut said about MMR, it has hurt the game so badly. BHVR seems to be against being a comp game yet encourages it through matchmaking and by removing the silly side of the game like demo and billy parkour by adding invisible walls to everything. It just sucks. Skill expression is dead while the game keeps being made more competitive than ever.
The devs never knew what they were doing. And never learned from their mistakes.
That’s why everything is just trial and error, constantly. As if the game never left Beta testing.
they know they have to make their original killers op af or no one is going to buy them
