  1. DbD stops being a horror game after a month of playing it at most, save for stealth killers. Other than that, it’s a stressful game rather than being scary. Saying something “doesn’t fit DbD” is just a stupid argument at this point.

  2. I think it's really as simple as people just don't want DbD to turn into fortnite. There's plenty of horror IPs out there. The problem is that they're not big enough for BHVR to make tons of money on. So instead they go for IPs that are less horror but more widely popular. Personally, I'd like to see them focus on original content rather than pursuing other IPs.

  3. Unsure if you'll respond to this but I hope you take this in mind.
Hi Bran, I generally agree with your takes but in this instance I don't think it's a good idea to just be alright with whatever the developers have/have no real vision for the game.
Of course, adding horror adjacent characters is mostly fine, and they bring new perks and powers to the game, but there should probably be standards in place for what to add. The line should be that it is related to horror in some way, shape, or form: the game is a horror Smash Bros, after all. It'd be like adding several movie and TV characters to Smash Bros instead of characters like Master Chief or Doomguy- not only is it a step away from those characters, but it also compromises the vision of Smash Bros being "a collection of gaming characters". Noting the vision for the game and being wary that it'll be compromised is a fair take, and frankly I don't want the game to end up like Fortnite or such and lack any sense of aesthetic vision.

Also, it's a bit disingenuous to claim that they're running out of horror IPs to choose from? There are tons of films, tv shows, video games, and even novels that they can get horror characters from: even ignoring the big names like FNAF, Jason, a proper Freddy, or Pennywise, we still have plenty of franchises. SOMA, Amnesia, Slender Man, FAITH, Signalis, Darkwood, Predator, M3GAN, Hatchet, The Conjuring, The Exorcist, The Thing, Little Nightmares, Lost in Vivo, GTFO, Nosferatu, basically all of the Hammer Horror/Universal classic monsters, The Walking Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Shaun of the Dead, Jaws, Dead Space, My Bloody Valentine, Trick R Treat, A Quiet Place, Thanksgiving, Terrifier, Cry of Fear/Afraid of Monsters, Prey, Stasis, World of Horror, The Babadook, Puppet Master, House of 1000 Corpses, Re-Animator, Coraline, The Fly, Zombieland, Pearl, Christine, The Host, The Mist, 28 Days Later, An American Werewolf in London, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Rocky Picture Horror Show, American Horror Story, Annihilation, Gremlins, Candyman, Bubba Ho-Tep, Fatal Frame, Siren, Condemned, F.E.A.R., Dead Rising, Dead Island, Dying Light, Clock Tower, Deadly Premonition, The Evil Within, Manhunt, Dino Crisis, Call of Cthulhu or literally any Lovecraftian monster, Penumbra. This isn't even getting into older and perhaps less well known films like Jacob's Ladder or Wolf's Creek.

Now, some of these franchises may be more obscure than others, but most of these games or movies are critically acclaimed, and are oftentimes well known among Horror fans. As a game that predominantly appeals to horror fans, I don't see why they couldn't pick literally any of the 20+ franchises I just listed, especially since some may be popular amongst horror fans yet not exactly huge names, thereby being cheaper licenses.

DBD players mainly care about aesthetics and gameplay. All of these franchises would be popular with horror fans, fit the aesthetic, and provide ample opportunities for creative survivor and killer gameplay. A clear example is Wesker: a ton of people really dislike RE5 and the later direction Resident Evil took, and it'd be a lie to say that Wesker is oftentimes a person's favorite horror character aesthetically or story-wise. Yet, he is incredibly popular both because he is faithful to his core character AND his gameplay is amazing. By contrast, characters like Sadako or Alien from much bigger franchises brought less players in, due to either being weak, hard to use and master, or frustrating on release.

Ultimately, the game has a TON of options when it comes to new licenses, both big, medium, and lesser known (all of which would be very popular with horror fans). These options work for both survivors and killers, and offer very unique opportunities for the devs (SOMA, Darkwood, and Signalis offering non-human player characters, Dead Space and F.E.A.R. offering fully-helmeted survivors with tech and lights on them, Jaws and Annihilation offering animal killers, Puppet Combo and Gremlins bringing in even smaller or varied killers, etc) that would let them experiment with new power concepts, maps, and perks. This isn't even getting into the possibilities of sequel chapters, for SH2, L4D2, and more!
They have plenty of options, and plenty of financial incentive. Thus, I don't see how a lack of licenses is really a valid take, especially when people offer rather egregious concepts for the game, like Homelander, Portal, or Jujutsu Kaisen. Those licenses would take away from the game's main aesthetic in a far worse manner than Alan Wake, DbD, and Lara (who, frankly all have solid enough reasons to be allowed in, with the Lara chosen literally being based off The Descent).

I fail to see why the game should dilute its own brand when it comes to its horror aesthetic when it has so many options, from old and new licenses. Besides, we don't see people clamoring for updates to end because "they're running out of power concepts".

  4. Time for super yap but TLDR the issue isn’t ‘fitting’ it’s jadedness with licenses.

I just think it’s jadedness with licensed content. The licenses after Chucky we’ve been getting apart from Lara Croft (who is one of the most iconic gaming characters of all time) are like… more niche? They’re cool and all but they’re not really wow additions. DND is huge but, let’s be honest here, it’s not something you think of when you think DBD licenses even if I do think it works.

Meanwhile you look at the original chapter from the last year and it’s a full analog horror chapter, with a beautiful new map, a terrifying found footage monster and a goth girl who’s in lesbians with Mikaela. Both Unknown and Sable are super super popular characters. I wished we’d get more kind of great original chapters like that to break up the licenses honestly, if you’re going to be doing more niche licenses. The Alien Chucky back to back worked so well because, let’s face it, it’s ALIEN AND CHUCKY. Those are two of the most iconic horror villains ever, super requested. So any license that isn’t on that level will feel a bit underwhelming if you don’t have those original chapters to break it up and give us time to wonder what the next license is.

  5. Can we stop making videos about this? Its like who cares? Let others think that and just enjoy the content regardless honestly. Im more annoyed at videos talking about these people then these people

  6. Im honestly at the point in dbd where who cares what is added into dbd been playing since release i would love see what kinda ip’s the devs could get bring anime anything crazy into dbd like who cares really if it brings new people in even better the, lara she isn’t horror but who cares, people say dont turn into Fortnite even though the game is still massive like at the end of day they probably will get what gets them money and what fits in the game, but imo they just to explore.

  7. Saying that Alan Wake doesn't fit DBD is wrong. He came from a horror franchise based around shadow entities. Something that speak along DBD, doesn't it?
Lara Croft on the other hand isn't that much abour horror. It had SOME horror moments at best.
And DND is straight up fantasy, so out of blue, so unfitting. Considering that main focus of dbd was "Life stuff going wrong thanks to entity". But knowing that BHVR asked about potential Diablo licenses, they won't stop on DND!

  8. The reason it's a nothing burger is because people don't understand what horror is.
The newer chap go off of what I assume is the suspenseful aspect of horror instead of the usually physical/aesthetic horror. I would like more jump scare horror characters because they tend to bring more fun undetectable perks/powers.
