Dead by Daylight has been around for 7 years at this point and within the next few months, we’ll begin Year 8. But before we get caught up in the hype for Year 8 and the Anniversary chapter, let’s take a moment and reflect.
Over the course of the game’s life, the developers have added 60(!) new characters, plenty of new Realms/maps, and game-changing mechanics like Obsessions, Hexes, Boons, and Scourge Hooks. With all of these additions, some years are bound to pack more of a punch than others.
And so we ask the following question: which of DBD’s 7 years was the best? Which was the worst? Please sit back, relax, and enjoy the following video in which I – your friendly neighborhood sentient piece of pizza – seek to rank all 7 years.
Make sure to drop your personal rankings in the comments below!

I really think if the knight and skull merchant had lived up to their hype/expectations year 7 would have been one of the best years ever. It’s a shame that they gave them boring powers and that the skull merchant wasn’t a killer robot
I like year 3 only really for Ash and year 4 is also really cool because of the Strangerthings chapter
"fung"
Year 4 will always stand the test of time for me as it legit introduced my 3 favorite killers to play following The Deathslinger, The Oni and The Ghostface. I personally love the maps but would have to agree on the perks being somewhat underwhelming. I absolutely love Zarina as a survivor and Yui is very high up there as well. I'd be curious to see if bhvr could ever top this but I suppose we'll just have to wait for year 8 🙂
Tbf, the Jewish new year and Hindu new years haven't passed yet either…
There're probably other kinds of new year around the world that haven't passed yet too. Fun video regardless!💥
I agree with your ranking.
Worst to Best
7-Year 5
6-Year 2
5-Year 1
4-Year 7
3-Year 3
2-Year 4
1-Year 6
I have most characters in year 6 and I loved Portrait with interesting perk (pentimento) design gorgeous map etc
Jill and Leon are loved are lot
Sadako is great yet weak
Personally i am a huge fan of the Artist
Strongest perk releases over the years
Pinhead isn’t great to go against but is interesting
Loved all of it
Plopping down my ratings before hearing yours:
1-2st. Year 6 (Fav Map: RPD and Secondary Main: Leon) tied with
Year 4 (Demo! Oni! Deathslinger! Rock Solid Year.)
3rd. Year 1 (My Primary Main: Claudette and Secondary Main: Hag)
4th. Year 3 (Solid maps and Killers)
5th. Year 7 (It's Weskin' Time and Dredge pretty cool. The other two though…)
6th. Year 2 (Primary Main: Pig. Sadly, not a fan of the maps, other killers.)
7th. Year 5 (I do love PH though.)
A few relatively important things you forgot to mention was Year 3 introducing the cosmetic shop and Year 5 introducing the Rift and Tome. They gave us the most important part of any game: Being fashionable.
Year 4 was the best year imo, the licenses were great and felt very adaptive. The original chapters were very interesting and brought some fan favorite characters. This was also the year where unique terror radius’s were becoming more popular. The themes, perks, characters. Everything was great. I also had the most fun playing during this time.
I think people are overeacting with knight and skull merchant sure you can play them as 3 gen protector, but that also works on ANY killer this game has to offer outside off that they have a decently strong anti loop ability with their own upsides and downsides… i just dont get why are people so pissed about those 2 killers
1. Year 1
2. Year 5
3. Year 4
4. Year 3
5. Year 2
6. Year 6
7. Year 7
Guess what… surprise I'm a Freddy main =^•^=
Imagine year 8
Chapter 28 (Anniversary): Alien Chapter
Chapter 29: Werewolf or Vampire Chapter
Chapter 30: It Chapter
Chapter 31: The quadrupedal spider chapter
If that happened I think year 8 would be the best hands down.
Silent Hill Anniversary was the better one than all Characters. And other characters were cool
I started playing since Pinhead, so the newer updates might have an advantage because I was there to witness them, but ranking each year in my opinion off of the content they added:
7 – Year 2, not a fan of Freddy or Pig, Bubba’s pretty decent, and Huntress is really fun, all of the survivors were pretty neat, however, the perks are really bad, with the only good ones being BBQ&C, dead hard, vigil, Franklin’s, and while not very practical, blood warden is pretty evil and fun
6 – Year 5, pyramid head’s awesome, blight is my main, but twins and trickster are pretty lame, even though their aesthetics are cool, not a big midwich fan, and it’s a shame we didn’t get a map with trickster, because I would’ve loved to see something like the main menu for the update as a full map, perks were also pretty bad, with only Undying, Blood Favor, Built to last, and no way out being good, though, desperate measures is decent
5 – Year 3, not huge on clown or plague, but spirit and legion are fun to play, even if I don’t like fighting them, and the maps were decent (Except Yamaoka Estate), the survivors are cool, but the best part was the perks, clown, spirit, and plague have 9 great perks, all of legions are good, even Iron Maiden and Mad Grit in some niche roles, and for survivors, we have windows, deliverance, and distortion, with head-on being fun. To add onto this, as a big metalhead, I love all of the music references in the legion chapter, Jeff being in a mosh pit is part of his lore, distortion is obviously referring to how he distorts killer auras, but it could also be a reference to guitar distortion, Iron Maiden is referring to the medieval torture device, but it could also reference the band, and discordance is an actual musical technique by hitting 2 discordant notes, 2 notes, 2 survivors on a gen
4 – Year 6, Nemesis is awesome, artist is great, pinhead’s alright, but sadako is just one of my least favorite killers to play against and as, Leon and Jill are cool, Jonah’s pretty meh, and I hate Yoichi’s bright jacket, bad year for maps, giving us old RPD and eyrie of crows, but the perks were great, especially on the killer side, giving us lethal pursuer, eruption, pain resonance, pentimento, deadlock, plaything, COB and floods of rage, with blast mine, flashbang, and overcome for survivor
3 – Year 1, besides being the year the game was born to plague me, nurse, while fun, has always been a blight on this game’s design (No pun intended), I don’t enjoy hag all that much, but doc’s really interesting, Myers is cool, and of course, the classic launch characters like Billy are great, if a little weak, the survivors are all good, especially considering that Bill’s my main, and the perks were decent (Not counting launch date perks), with BT, unbreakable, STBFL, Devour hope, overcharge and nurse’s calling being great, while streetwise and ruin are pretty decent as well (Of course, I’m ranking current ruin)
2 – Year 7, Dredge and Wesker were fantastic, knight is cool, skull merchant was meh, for maps, garden of joy was… garden of joy, RPD East is great, RPD west is not, shattered square is cool, and the new shelter woods and red forest is great, some decent perks as well, darkness revealed, awakened awareness, TWACK!, face the darkness, wiretap, hyper focus, and fog wise being good, with nowhere to hide being one of the new best perks in the game, and the new teamwork perks being really interesting. Probably controversial to say that this year was better than the last, but I think people are so jaded from the skull merchant and knight to remember all of the really great things about this year, though, again, this is my first full year in this game, so I’m biased
1 – Year 4, Ghosty’s awesome, Demo’s awesome, Oni’s awesome, Deathslinger’s awesome, all of the survivors are awesome, dead dawg has grown on me and I think it’s decent, and even though I remember hating it, I miss Hawkin’s a lot, standout perks being Jolt, fearmonger, I’m all ears, dead man’s switch, self aware, and off the record (Again, current version)
It really sucks but although I adore all kill more than any og chapter I 100 percent understand why it wasn't a hit. Silent hill was great but damn everything else flopped
Yo! I don't usually comment on videos but this video idea was great so I thought to share some opinions.
I would argue that the 'pay-to-win' aspect of the game started with Ash's perk Mettle of Man, as on release it was the #1 no brainer survivor perk. Quite literally dead hard if it didn't require you to press a key to activate, and the requirements were guaranteed unless you were playing against Billy or Bubba.
I remember Sadako Rising being a very underwhelming drop for the community because they publicly announced the chapter a whole few months before release, and when the killer came out she was not particularly interesting to play, so people kind of ignored everything for a little while. The killer perks were slappers though and still are staples in a lot of my killer builds.
Lastly, my reasoning behind disliking the Shattered Square map is essentially an amalgamation of all my pet peeves with maps in DBD: too large, too many safe pallets, and too bright.
My rankings for the years would have to be 4, 1, 5, 6, 3, 7, 2. I strongly believe Y5 was not the worse year in DBD history, and for me personally the All-Kill chapter was the only 'miss', and I know lots of people love Trickster and Yun-Jin (perks are pretty cool but not enough to be a good chapter). Yes, I think twins has better game design than 99% of the community gives them credit for, and also more interesting gameplay from both sides than most of the more cookie-cutter 115% m1 killers added in recent history.
Great video <3
Year 5 was my fav moment of all, just for the silent hill collab. When they announced pyramid head I was about to scream bc BHVR made one of my requested license come to the game and later some map visual reworks arrived🥰🥰.
But also I've appreciated a lot year 4 bc of Ghostface and Demo, year 6 for pinhead, year 7 for Sadako/dredge and this year for the Knight. These are my mains that I love playing as and BHVR have stepped up a little bit overall 🙂
I loved both Year 3 and Year 4. Ghostface, Demogorgan, Executioner, just a bunch of really great and iconic killers. Clown main supremacy, also.
15:53 "Pinhead comes later"
Pinhead Later "I CAME"
Why is hag after huntress in the game roster if she came out before huntress? I thought those were chronological in terms of release
I forgot why i quitted dbd for 3 years but i remember it was during Oni chapter so it feels weird seeing year 4 at n.1
Well i do say back then i had hella fun with demi so i still see it as a great year even if i wasn't there for deathslinger
Year 2 gotta be the worst. Bubba, freddy, and pig were god awful at release and aren’t the best even know, pretty embarrassing
You call her "fung" as a real good Twitter boy. Are you happy that you recived good boy points?
This is a good video I love your choices and points I do have to say I've been playing since the silent hill chapter and it's amazing how far this game has changed and evolved my rankings is
1. Year 4
2. Year 3
3. Year 1
4. Year 5
5. Year 6
6. Year 7
7. Year 2
From best to worst: 6, 4, 2, 5, 7, 1, 3
Counting everything the game launched with as part of year 1 is a bit weird. So it should stay relatively low. Also, the game was shit back then. Exploits, cheaters, broken mechanics, one sided matches, killers being so weak it wasn’t funny…
I rank using chapters above everything else cause that’s the main attraction of a year over another
Year 6 brought many players, proof of it being beloved. All kill was devisive but many say that Trickster was a nice change of atmosphere, and obviously crafted with lots of care. Hellraiser, Mikaela. RE. You physocally cannot make a better year than this.
Year 4: Ghostface, ST, Deathslinger though not as played is well liked.
Year 2: Crowning achievement in terms of license for an unknown canadian studio to get Bubba and Freddy.
Year 5: Pyramid head. Blight is well loved. What makss him hated is being seen too often because he is too strong. Though if I remember correctly, at the time, people thought he was mid. PH carries the year alone.
Year 7 starts good with records players then drops by a lot but we got Wesker and Dredge is liked by many.
Year 1 got Micheal, Nurse turned the tables of the game by blinking outside the box. She changes the perception of what defines a killer and defined what worked, didn’t, what was too op and also what not to do again. After her, killer designs started following a similar pattern. She created the killer box by proving breaking it was too OP.
Year 3 was a bummer. Biased probably because I was on the disgusing as survivor killer who ended up being legion. Then the Split bandwagon with “oh he’s gonna have multiple personalities” which was also crushed. Clown was nice for 2 seconds. But we got Maurice.
I agree on everything but dead hard is not unhealthy for the game, especially now. You have to time it just right to even get value out of it. I feel like if dead hard were to be removed from the game then all perks that give the exposed status effect should be removed. It’s essentially the same thing as dead heard but just for killers.
I love year 7 but I still wish the knight chapter was an actual castle instead of a rural map
And so far I liked the skull merchant and it made shelter woods more interesting too I love how it looks
And it had Rebecca Ada and wesker yeah I loved this year imma be honest 🙂
Your vids are awesome and I love watching them. You deserve a sub
I started playing right at the beginning of year 2 and I remember year 3 and 4 being simply magical
I love you Das! Keep up the good work
I’ll put my opinion on the years I’ve played-
1. Year 6: I love all the chapters in this year. I love artist with her lore and design
2. Year 4: you said it best, all bangers. Gave us ghosty, even though I’m still waiting on a Bully or Stu skin (I especially want Stu so when he gets stunned he’s like “YOU HIT ME WITH A PALLET DICK”
3. Year 7: personally I was a fan of every chapter. Just an overall good year for me personally.
4: year 3: gave me my main legion, not much else really to say
5: year 5: pyramid head is another go to killer for me and I love him, but not much else tbh. I hate playing trickster and binding of kin is just super lame, although I love playing the twins just to dick around every once and a while.
