Hey everyone, a hotly contested topic when it comes to DbD is the horror of the game. Today I want to explore the horror of Dead by Daylight. Does it have horror? Did it lose the horror? What even counts as horror?
At the time of this video’s release Chapter 32.5 has been revealed to be Tomb Raider, with Survivor, Lara Croft!

I miss the old maps so much man. They had a horror feel to them that’s gone now.
I find Mr Puddles horrible. There it is the horror. I still hope it's a sick joke by the defs😊😂
It's not a horror game
THANKS FOR TALKING ABOUT THIS, horror is the scary feeling that theres a creature lurking around and is about to kill you thats true horror, but a flashing png with a loud noise makes u jump Which scared you on the spot but thats not really horror thats just you jumping
Personally I think the raw amount of information survivors get sapps the horror from the game. Without a single perk I have as a survivor information on who is being chased if anyone, who is doing what, the progress of what they are doing, the hook and health state they are in, whether they are under the influence of a killer power (sometimes even more information about the progress of the killers power then the killer themselves), and a visual representation of the terror radius that shows lullabies as well.
When I use perks I can see all usable resources around me at all times, I can see the killers aura from anywhere in the map while they are doing a breaking action, see the auras of teammates I healed/was healed by regardless of range, see close by injured survivors, see close by survivors, see the three closest gens, see all totems after a Gen is done, see the killers aura after coming off a hook. I could go on and on.
A little bit of information goes a long way but it also sapps the spooky Ness out of the game
Skull Merchant is the pure definition of not scary in dbd tbh. Her lore i wouldnt even say is eree or disturbing.
When i first started playing dbd, i did my first game as Survivor against my Sister whilst she was playing Pyramid Head, however i couldnt say i got scared more so then i got annoyed. I dont think i've truely found something about this game that is scary or frightning from the time of playing. I've pretty much just had that competitiveness to myself
I play this game since early 2019 and still get scared or have intense moments. There was last year the spirit with this killer instinct addon, appears in front of my poor vitto and hit me – I was screaming and just stand there. the spirit starts nodding at me and simple walks away, she knew that she has scared me to death in this moment and gave me the time to calm down 🤣 was pretty nice, after the match we shared a nice talk in the afterchat <3
Horror and comedy are the 2 mist complicated genres imo, you can't tell someone what they are scared of and you can't tell someone what they find funny
Imo dbd has always been essentially a fighting game with horror elements. You constantly are having pvp interactions where you're trying to outsmart your opponent by sprinkling fakes into your own gameplay while also reading whoever you're in chase with. Sure theres the overall macro managing of gens on killer side or survivor side trying not to get forced towards your teammates and letting the killer create more pressure.
But if we really wanna get into, this shit just tag with extra steps 😂
The only thing scary now is the MMR and bugs. I enjoy playing older versions of the Gane. It just has more soul to it. The game feels more corporate now.
I'm new to this game and I didn't start playing DbD for the horror. And besides few elements, those linked to my phobias and anxiety disorder, I don't think DbD is scary. I fear loud noises and jumpscares. I have emetophobia so facing Plague gives me an literal panic attack. Crotus Prenn map makes me uncomfortable because I have been hospitalized for mental disorders. I personally think I'm not scared of DbD because everything is controlled by people. Behind every killer there is a real human playing it. Also DbD has a lot of lore, which greatly interests me. That's why I picked up the game in first place.
No dbd is not a horror game anymore, it is horror themed which is perfectly fine.
A horror game only really works if you do not know, which is just not possible in a pvp multiplayer game such as dbd.
I do feel strongly though that the horror theming should be retained which thus far the devs have done nicely
Dead by Daylight: Rated M for Everyone
0:56 wow, the original Meg
Gather around, youngins, original Meg's race was changed because of the implications with Sprint Burst
Every horror game loses its horror. Im not even afraid anymore when I play outlast, alien isolation, or any horror game I play long term
Well I think people who just started to play this game think it's pretty scary at first but well….
If you play like me since 2016 u're pretty much used to it.
Nostalgia plays a big role here.
I like to see DbD as a horror themed competitive game, or a competitive game for people who enjoy the horror genre, instead of an actual horror game. The game is hardly meant to make players scared.
Well said. Horror is a very diverse genre, and it differs from person to person. Even with Nicholas Cage, comedy has a cemented place in horror.
i’m addicted to these videos.
Here is true fear
Your on backwater swamp and your alone and can’t find anyone and after a second you turn you camera around when doing a gen and off in the distance all you see is a expressionless white mask staring at you you try and brush it off until you hear the Halloween theme and your heart beat starts to get louder…
I got my girlfriend to play the game for the first time and we joined a lobby as a swf and she was constantly fearful, the mere heartbeat caused so much dread im her. I do believe thay dbd hasnt lost its horror it's just the audience have become more accustomed to it
