The saddening thing about this loss is that it actually could have happened in the show. That like Hopper, Steve and Nancy somehow get teleported to the Realm during the time gap between seasons 3 and 4. When they vanished, it was only for like an hour in Hawkins, but for us it's been two years. The only uncertainty is whether they remember or not. It's painful either way. If they do, it's a new tremendous guilt they have to live with like Barb's death. If they don't, they'll never understand the weird dreams that cloud them, why it aches to see these random people torn down by strange monsters, never knowing they found a cosmic prison. Never knowing that the people there loved them.
