In Defense of the Skull Merchant | Regarding the Predator

Plenty of people seem to think that the Dead by Daylight’s Skull Merchant was originally supposed to be the Predator… I’m not sure I can agree. In this video, I look at the evidence in question and determine whether or not Tools of Torment was originally intended to be licensed… you know, as much as a source-less goofball like me can “determine” anything for sure.

Thanks for watching, by the way. Been in a bit of a rut lately and I really appreciate the ones who have stuck around. Y’all are neat and I appreciate you 🙂

  1. You basically summed up all the reasons why I think this is just a theory and massive coincidence, and that's it. I dislike how this theory is being taken as an absolute fact when there is no concrete evidence about it, and it could even age up like milk in the future if we do end up getting Predator or Alien. If they add Predator, we need heat vision at minimum, and not stupid drones and three gens.

  2. my theory on this whole thing is that Xenomorph is the anniversary chapter and along with that comes a legendary skin for skull merchant of predator so they just made there own character to just have a predator legendary skin for maximum profits

and i wont lie if thats the case its a genius but so evil at the same time

  3. I think the only way that this theory would make even a little sense is that maybe Skull Merchant was intended to be Predator, but the deal went south very early into development, hence why there are these small things here and there that seem Predator-ish.

Alternatively, this chapter could've been original from the very beginning, and these nods to predator are there just for the sake of being there. BHVR are no strangers to making original killers that are loosely (or sometimes not so loosely) based on the classics. Trapper with Jason, Billy with Bubba, etc.

  4. Ok with the reason of the skull ripping out, they did try to make it similar because we constantly see spines getting ripped out from the back. With the plasma caster in prey it doesn’t really have one. And with the voice mimic gameplay. With the green blood why is the killer bleeding in this game

  5. While I agree with the video that the skull merchant isn't the predator and never was going to be, the entire chapter was designed to allude the predator. The mask, the name, the three dots, it always meant to subtly make you think it was the predator. Now BHVR aren't stupid when it comes to licensing, especially if a potential lawsuit could happen. All those differences is precisely what they would use to protect themselves. No one can deny that when she was announced, everyone thought predator, which means their marketing strategy worked. Now I don't know if this was the original intention or if a predator was on the docket and they had to hastily redo the character. It's possible because of how poorly designed the killer is, but it's also possible that they wanted to make a low-budget chapter that used nostalgia to get them more money than they put in. All that is speculation. However, you can't deny that the chapter made you think of the predator. There hasn't been a single person that didn't compare skull merchant to predator and that's what the chapter intended to do

  6. if it was never meant to be predator I feel like they wanted the chapter to be compared with predator …even the way they say they want killers to feel like the "apex predator" is subtly comparing them

only problem being that they made a terrible wannabe killer this time

  7. Only one thing is true about all of this. The only way we will know if this theory was true or false is if they ever launch a Predator chapter in the future. Otherwise, we will never know.

  8. Yo the Skull Girl has the same claws as Predator. She also gets undetectable inside the drone. What if predator gets invisible too, wouldn't be that far of a reach!

    But she doesn't get invisible…

Yeah we said that it would be easy to change that last minute.

    But she doesn't get invisible.

Yeah that's the whole theory part…

    But she doesn't get invisible

    Wtf

  9. I think the biggest mark against why this could be the case is just the fact they look nothing alike. Regardless of what their power is, these kinds of models, animations, and power designs take a very long time to create, edit, and finalize. BHVR wouldn't spend all the time on making a model for the Predator if they were unsure if they'd be able to get the license. My guess is they were designing an original killer and they decided to base the weapon slightly off of the Predator's claw arm. Perhaps they thought the three dots were a cool visual motif and include that as well. I find that a thousand times more likely than "They rushed the rest of Skull Merchant when they lost the license."

  10. I think all the arguments that was made pointing to it not being Predator fits in that you don't know how quickly the license holders might have jumped on them if they felt their character had been "stolen ". If they want to get it in the future, they have to be careful.

  11. So what I am about to say is not a aha! Gotcha! Thing it's a observation. Nothing more or less. The part that made me think predator at all was actually the Mori animation. it is completely half baked, It did not make any sense to me. SK knocks them down and then the survivor looks around panicked like they can't see or even know where the killer was. Then the surprised look they get when the SK stabs them from behind was so puzzling to me because we can see the killer the whole time! It is like the cheese filled trope of the kids being dumb as the killer chops them down. The blades sticking out and them being lifted up reminded me of the Predator as he's killed that way a few times in the movies. So I was immediately struck that the WHOLE Mori would make far more sense if it was a deCloaking Predator. When I thought this I couldn't help but feel it was a interpretation of what a predator could possibly bring to the table.

  13. Respectfully, there's just as much evidence saying this is Predator as there is saying that it might not be. I understand you're likely doing Devil's Advocate here but It's not like we got a whole new map here. No! They likely had to scramble to throw together a map rework so we didn't lose our minds. Skull Merchant doesn't need dreadlocks, fishnets, or any of that for her original design to have been Predator. That's easy enough to leave out. Even her mori is a dead give away that it was originally for Predator as the survivor's look surprised when stabbed from behind. The hand on the shoulder is EXACTLY what Predator does in the movies. Moving on to more points. You said that the undetectable from the drones doesn't mean that this was Predator because it's undetectable not invisible. Again, it's easy to remove things especially visual features! It's not hard to be like "well, lisense fell through let's salvage this." and then see exactly this! If you aren't playing devil's advocate then pretend for a second that this was a Predator license that fell through and you have a bunch of Predator assets and however long to come up with a full chapter what would you do? Me? I think the answer is "hey can I copy your homework? Yeah, sure just change it a bit so it doesn't look like you did. Okay!" Rework a map instead of make a new one. Reuse as many assets as possible (which we don't know what assets they had at this point). We know licenses have fell through in the past. It's not unrealistic to think this happened again. Regardless of all I said how many coincidences does it take for it to not be one?

Side note: I'm one of the few that REALLY like her and don't think she's weak or any of that. I'm not mad at BHVR for this chapter.
