When I heard of this rumor I immediately thought of some type of steps then ends with the survivors shining their flashlights at the entity in the basement hooks to basically kill the killer. Similar to doing steps in F13 with mom's sweater to kill Jason.
I’m not sure what the mystery is. There’s the exit gates, the hatch, and the all powerful “DC”.
1. Escape: exit gate
2. Escape: hatch
3. Escape: death

What if it’s “killed the killer”
The third way has been discovered it is when the killer DC

I guess that there is 3 way of escaping, but not what we think at first.
Firstly, you can escape by running away from the killer (exit gates and hatch)
Secondly you can escape if the killer disconnects, therefore, the killer is nowhere to be found which means that he can't kill you anymore.
And the 3rd way to escape is by disconnecting as a survivor. When you disconnect, their is no corpse or anything, you just disappeared from the trial. You escaped it and you didn't even die.

What if the third way of escaping the trial is just in reference to being sacrificed to the entity? The entity does pull the survivor up to the sky, and technically you are leaving the trial.
I heard that if you press Alt + F4 on your keyboard then you can escape early

There is a perfectly legal way to escape a third way. It happened to me yesterday. I was on second hood phase, but before my death registered the killer disconnected. Ta da! Easy escape

Well, for survivor there are locations where using dead hard can get you outside of the maps bounds and allow you to escape through the escape quebox

Technically a DC is escaping not just the trial, but the game 😂
The sky counting as a death makes sense. Just as crossing the line of the exit gate triggers the escape animation, there's probably a limit in the sky that triggers the death counter as the survivor is taken into the sky.
Also Mint Skull, I wonder if people are confusing the secret with the one on Sanctum of Wrath. There's a secret confirmed by the devs that hasn't been discovered to this day.

Okay, this is going to be a theory, but actually when you told us that the third way of escaping the trial going up, I thought that maybe the key is the Entity itself. We already have the perk Repressed Alliance (I hope it's this one and I spelled it correctly lol) when you use the Entity to block the generator, so… maybe there is a hidden way to make Entity help you escape? Like the golden toolbox in Midwich, which appears only at the end of the endgame collapse, there theoretically could be a one specific spot where you don't get killed by the Entity, but you manage to dodge your death? This is just a random theory, but I wanted to share it 🙂

It could be something with the crows. If it’s been in the game for 5 years, that would mean that (if) a killer is involved it probably would have to the trapper or the wraith. I do think it would be the wraith though because of him being more on the sympathetic side while also being related to the spirit world. Right now the only ways I can think of escaping with those would be:
A. If you found a way to somehow get every crow to fly up, then get the wraith to go invisible and get sacrificed while going up, maybe it would symbolize the trials being empty and everything going up/leaving the entity
B: from another comment saying that the fire barrel things could be a way of escaping, maybe if all the survivors died around the fire, with the wraith invisible while the crows are all gone
It is probably super hard to get all of the crows off the map tho

I see you used one of my tweets asking about this topic. I have never seen the video you pointed out, but I did used to watch their weekly dev streams and I'm 99% sure it was Cote who said it. We used to talk about this topic a bit in the Paulie Esther community. The last time we discussed this we came to conclusion MCote was trolling and the only other way to "escape" was to be sacrificed.
Killing the killer would have been awesome. I personally wouldn't want the survivor to become a killer or a killer become a survivor. What they could do is make a killer that (would be in the lore) was a survivor, but they went so insane, the entity itself would take advantage of them. It could be an unlockable killer that requires you to kill the killer. There can be skins for it that require you to kill the killer as that survivor. For example; to get the Dwight skin, you have to kill the killer as Dwight
no guys the developers simply knew that to add the third way of escape, they had to balance the game, thats why we'll never find it
The sky thing makes me think of a few things, some (or most) of which have already been said, but i'll still say it
1-kill zones/physics breaking things
if you go on, say, the roblox engine and somehow get super high up, through, Oh I dont know, like, an at least 6 year old elevator glitch that still hasn't been patched (probably cuz its not that known, used or impactful) your character just starts turning into spaguetti, from what i've seen on some youtube videos this is commonly accidentally found on some space games, so the devs could've put a killzone there to prevent that, or they had to put it somewhere and didnt wanna accidentally kill anything below the trial if somebody somehow got here so they put it in the sky as another person said.
2- the death or dc trigger
your character could get teleported there once you die by getting hooked or dc, your item gets instantly dropped into the ground, the killer gets three hook states as a result of it and depending on what happened you get an icon which can mean you're either bad, unlucky or just cant get out, or you get a noise and an icon that usually scream shit teammate
OR (and here's what i think could be it) the dc for when its unintentional (iirc when its not an intentional dc (game crash, etc) it doesn't actually make a noise), but since your pc is still asking the server for stuff and giving it stuff back the server gets confused and refuses to give you the dc icon, which could also be how cheaters hold the game hostage.

When you paused on the killer pov at 19:04 , below the map, where for the survivor it said unknown tile or uk, it said 141.
Is that normal or does it usually say another thing?
Has anyone ever tried a time based exit? What if after some long amount of time the game ends.

I mean, survivors were originally able to climb, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was supposed to be a way to climb over the map walls and escape that way. Maybe you'd need to craft a ladder or something in the endgame.
Maybe the teleport to the cages.
I don't have much evidence for this, but after watching this video and finishing checking out almost all of dbd lore I think I know what the 3rd way to escape is. What if the 3rd way to escape wasn't a gameplay thing, but more a lore thing. On top of this, what if it was more than just escaping a trial, but instead escaping the entire entity's realm?? I think it's entirely possible that this is what happened to Vigo, he made the 2nd way to escape, and found the 3rd way to escape which allowed him to leave the entity's realm. This could also explain how Talbot escaped, he had access to Vigo's Journal as seen as one of Blight's addons, maybe Vigo not only found the 3rd way to escape but wrote it down in his journal and allowed Talbot, who found that journal, to also escape.
